Escape from New York
Kurt Russell teams up with John Carpenter for the dystopian classic
When discussing great directorial works, John Carpenter’s work from 1978 to 1986 must be mentioned. Beginning in 1978, Carpenter directed Halloween, Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Christine, Starmanand Big problem in Little China all in sequence. The latter three films are up for discussion, but avoid Carpenter Halloween for The Thing is the work of legends.
The only science fiction film in four films, Escape from New York, is my favorite of the bunch. Set in an alternate version of 1997, Manhattan Island is now a maximum security prison. Air Force One is hijacked and US President John Harker (Donald Pleasence) lands in Manhattan. Harker, now a hostage, will be killed if the government attempts a rescue mission. The only way to save Harker is to get the criminal on their side. Enter Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), an ex-soldier and outlaw who agrees to rescue the president in exchange for a pardon.
The 1970s were filled with antiheroes like Travis Bickle and “Dirty” Harry Callahan. Russell introduced a new form of anti-hero never before seen in a sci-fi film. With his signature eye patch and long hair, Snake Plissken doesn’t care about getting revenge on his oppressors or gaining fame. Snake’s only goal is to survive, and if he ruffles feathers in the process, so be it. Snake’s quickness and punk rock attitude propelled him to cinematic greatness.
Jackie Brown
Max Cherry forever
In the mid-1990s, Quentin Tarantino could make any movie he wanted the success of Pulp Fiction. The crime saga elevated Tarantino to auteur status and earned him his first Oscar for screenplay. Playing by his own rules, Tarantino chose to direct the Elmore Leonard adaptation Rum Punchit happened Jackie BrownHis homage to the blaxploitation films he fell in love with in the 1970s.
Flight attendant Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) finds herself in hot water after the police arrest her for smuggling. Jackie convinces crime lord Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson) to let him work with the authorities to smuggle the rest of his money. However, Jackie plans to defy Ordell and the cops and keep the money. He needs help to make everything go well. Enter Max Cherry (Robert Forster), an amiable thug who falls in love with Jackie.
Grier plays Jackie as a rock star with her beauty, charisma and leading lady presence. The chemistry between Forester and Grier, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work, is tender and loving. No sex scenes are needed to sell this romance. First Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Jackie Brown easily Tarantino’s sweetest film.
LA Confidential
A neo-noir in the city of angels
Admittedly, it took me a long time to watch LA ConfidentialLos Angeles neo-noir set in the 1950s. More specifically, I waited until 2026 to watch LA Confidential for the first time. Look, we all have our boredom. I take full responsibility for my actions, but I’m already making up for it as my top movie to watch this weekend.
1953; Corruption is rampant in the Los Angeles Police Department. Sergeant Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce), the son of a murdered officer, believes in honesty, even if it means betraying his fellow officers. Officer Bud White (Russell Crowe) is a loyal, old-school cop who believes in solving problems with his fists. Sergeant Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) is more interested in magazine covers than justice. All three men become involved in a murder investigation involving dirty cops and wealthy business partners.
LA Confidential is a satisfying murder mystery with an intriguing premise, riveting suspense, and an explosive conclusion. Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland wrote a brilliant screenplay worthy of an Oscar. Seeing as how the three leads’ careers ended, why didn’t Pierce make it as big as Crowe and Spacey? Pearce is just as good, if not better, than his Oscar-winning counterparts. “Justice for Pierce,” I’d say, but the Academy finally nominated the Australian actor last year for his work in the film. Cruel.
Don’t forget that all three movies are streaming for free on Plex. You don’t even need an email to watch movies.
