Netflix, the streaming platform that has been around for many years, has tons of movies to watch. Whether original movies that make the subscription worthwhile or box office hits in streaming now, there are plenty of options.
And if you can spend a lot of time watching some great Netflix shows, there’s another, better way to relax on the platform, and that’s through some underrated Netflix original movies.
Nonnas
Calling all foodies!
NonnasReleased in 2025, the film stars Vince Vaughn and actually tells a true story. Directed by Stephen Chbosky, the film tells the story of restaurateur Joe Scaravella, and after his mother dies, he decides to open an Italian restaurant where real grandmothers cook instead of professionally trained chefs.
As a foodie and lover of all things Italian, Nonnas it’s the kind of movie that’s joyful and just there to make you smile. Vaughn’s performance is sweet and heartwarming, and by the end of the movie, you’ll either be craving a big Italian dinner with your friends, or maybe you’ll want to open your own restaurant.
Animals of No Nation
A Netflix classic
Fun fact: Animals of no nation It was Netflix’s first original movie, and yet no one is talking about it and how awesome it is.
Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, starring Idris Elba and released in 2015 Animals of no nation, tells the story of a child soldier in the civil war. It is based on Uzodinma Iweala’s novel of the same name and is a harrowing tale of war, its effects on us and the grief that follows. It is a well-told drama that deserves more praise.
Rush
Adam Sandler shows off his dramatic skills
I’m sure that when we think of Adam Sandler movies, some of his comedies come to mind, e.g Happy Gilmore or Billy Madisonbut the popular comedian has had a bit of a run with dramas for a decade or so. Rush is one of them.
Directed by Jeremiah Zagar and starring big names like Queen Latifah, Robert Duvall and more, Rush Cast Sandler as an NBA scout who discovers a talented player in Spain after a series of unfortunate incidents at work. Then he makes it his mission to prepare him for the NBA draft.
While there is certainly comedy in this film (as always with Sandler productions), Rush giving the actor time and day to really show off his dramatic chops. Plus, who doesn’t love watching Sandler shoot a basketball or two?
Jim and Andy
This documentary is one of the best on the platform
Yes, there are many original films with fictional ideas, but I knew that here I had to make a documentary that struck me and that no one was talking about. Jim & Andy– or known as Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond— is a documentary about Jim Carrey and his portrayal of Andy Kaufman in the critically acclaimed film. The man in the moon.
It’s fascinating to hear Carrey’s stories, especially as a non-actor, and how he sticks to the role and struggles to separate his own mind from the person he portrays. It details the challenges faced by many dedicated actors. It also makes you appreciate the skill it takes to bring a performing artist like Andy to life.
Private Life
Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn shine
If we take it back to 2018, Private Life is a comedy-drama that anyone who has a family or is trying to start a family can watch. Directed and written by Tamara Jenkins, the film stars Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn as a couple who are desperate to have a baby and are willing to do anything to make it happen.
Although this film has many comedic aspects, Private Life it’s the kind of movie that takes such a heavy subject as infinity and presents it in such a classy way. It’s not afraid to show how it affects marriages, relationships, and more. With two killer performances from Giamatti and Hahn, Private Life is the perfect choice.
Trumps
This rom-com is hilarious and wild
Finally, we have it Trumps. Directed by Adam Leon, Trumps is the type a rom-com movie it will become your new favorite Saturday afternoon must-watch comedy. Starring Callum Turner and Grace Van Patten, Trumps follows two strangers who somehow wind up on the wrong side of town when a briefcase swap goes wrong. From there, he must try to find the right bag to survive, leading to a crazy (and romantic) night.
I love this movie. This is a great example of a movie that really fell under the radar and deserves more hype because it has everything you could want in a rom-com. A crazy, weird love story? Check it out. Sizzling screen chemistry? Check it out. Spectacular performances that appeal to you? Check it out. However, I don’t think I’ve ever met a single person who watched this movie. If you need a good rom-com to watch this weekend, I would recommend it Trumps.
There are really many great movies to watch on Netflix this month, but these are just some of my personal underrated picks that you’ll have a great time watching no matter what. Oh, and be prepared to cry at least once.
