The new clipboard manager for Windows 11 is here, and it’s better than Microsoft’s in several key ways. “Edge Drop” is still in the early stages of development, but this is the current view structure a lot encouraging.
Edge Drop is a clipboard manager that can also be used for some lightweight file management. It remains pinned to the left side of your screen until you move the mouse over it or use the keyboard shortcut (Alt + C).
The program supports text, images and several file types. Any item you copy in Windows 11 is added to the Edge Drop by default. You can also drag items to Edge Drop.
Drag and drop makes it easy to grab multiple files, drop them into Edge Drop, and then paste them elsewhere.
Edge Drop supports content aggregation, which I find useful for organizing projects. I’d like to see stacks work with different content types like text and images.
The developer of Edge Drop, AdiArtist, shared the program on Reddit. you can do download Edge Drop from the program’s website and read more about it GitHub.
Let me briefly note that I was not used to the name of the program. Microsoft already has a feature called “Edge Drop”. Although the browser function is stoppedI suspect Microsoft will want to protect its name.
Edge Drop vs Windows 11 Clipboard
Windows 11 already has a robust, built-in clipboard history that you can call up with Win + V. It supports item pinning, cross-device syncing, and has been an integral part of my workflow for years. Even with Edge Drop installed, I don’t leave it.
Where Windows 11’s clipboard is heavily keyboard controlled, Edge Drop is built more for the mouse. If you’re working on a creative project, it feels completely natural to drag and drop elements into organized stacks.
Reminds me when I review HyperSpace TrackPad Pro (unfortunately was cancelled). Using this trackpad has changed my workflow; editing a video with it felt completely different than navigating a web page. It didn’t replace my mouse, but it was a perfect companion tool.
I feel the same way about Edge Drop. It’s a convenient, mouse-oriented clipboard manager that’s always a gesture away, and it’s earned a permanent place next to Windows 11’s default clipboard.
