The 2027 BMW i7 may not be a complete Neue Klasse overhaul Like the iX3but may still represent a technological breakthrough. German brand is a partnership Croatian supercar manufacturer Rimac has teamed up specifically with Rimac Technology to bring sixth-generation (Gen6) battery technology to the i7’s luxury sedan format.
The application will combine BMW’s 4,695 lithium-ion cylindrical cells with the existing fifth-generation (Gen5) modular design. According to BMW, the move will provide 20 percent higher energy density, faster charging and “significantly increased range.” The company is not providing updated figures at this stage.
Rimac manufactures batteries at its plant in Croatiaand deliver them to BMW’s 7 Series plant in Dingolfing. The company has long focused on boutique supercars like its Nevera and the like Bugatti badge (acquired in 2021), but BMW sees the partnership as a transition to “high-volume” car projects.

What we know about the 2027 BMW i7
Renewal, not revolution
BMW plans to introduce the 2027 i7 and its traditional 7 Series counterpart on April 22 at the Auto China 2026 exhibition in Beijing. He proposed in March teaser image It featured the high-end car’s Neue Klasse-style illuminated grille and headlights, but little else.
Most details are still under wraps. But all 7 series is expected Getting an iX3-like cockpit with a parallelogram infotainment display and a panoramic projection covering the entire dashboard. However, the interior may not change drastically in cars like the iX3.
We are rapidly rolling out Neue Klasse technologies across our entire model portfolio, including of course our all-electric luxury sedan. The teams of both companies have developed an individual solution for the new BMW i7. The excellent cooperation with Rimac Technology is a good example of the innovative power of Europe. ~Dr. Thomas Engelhardt, Senior VP Development for High Voltage Storage and Charging, BMW Group.
Possible trim levels and powertrains
What the rumor mill says
The i7 is rumored to come in 50, 70 and M70 performance trim levels, though they all include a 112.5kWh battery.
The initial combustion engine 7 Series will likely be powered by a 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder engine, but future versions could include an M-badged twin-turbo V8, a diesel variant, and a plug-in hybrid. In mid-2027, you’ll see the i7 model, as well as the Alpina 7 Series, which includes six-cylinder and V8 editions.
when the i7 might hit the market
It is not clear when the wider design of the i7 will be ready. BMW introduced the current design in 2023, so there may not be a bigger redesign come a few more years.
“BMW has always been known for pushing engineering to the highest level, which made this collaboration particularly exciting for us,” said Mate Rimac, founder and president of the Rimac Group. “Together, we developed a high-voltage battery system in record time that unlocks the full potential of the new cylindrical cells, delivering significant improvements in energy, range and charging performance.”
