Google adds a new option in Android 17 Beta 3 that lets users control which apps are forced into “Extended” dark theme modes.
Android’s “Extended Dark Theme” can force an app to display in a dark theme, otherwise it won’t support it. While many apps support the dark theme natively and interchangeably with the Android system theme, this tool allows the user to force the change.
However, using this tool can result in some readability issues, so Google provides a detailed option.
Starting with Android 17 Beta 3, the “Extended” dark theme now has a per-app setting that allows you to disable the forced dark mode when a specific app isn’t performing well. This is a welcome addition, because while it’s nice to use dark mode in all apps, it doesn’t work so well in some places.
The new option can be found under Settings > Display & touch > Dark theme > Advanced.
