Apple announces MacBook Neo battery cycle limit

Apple has updated its support documentation to confirm the maximum battery cycle count for the new MacBook Neo. Here are the details.

First things first: what counts as battery life?

In short, each battery cycle corresponds to the number of times a Mac notebook consumes the equivalent of 100% of battery capacity on one or more charges.

Or as Apple explains it:

For example, you can use half of the laptop’s energy in one day and then fully charge it. If you do the same thing the next day, it will count as one charge cycle instead of two. In this example, it can take several days to complete a cycle.

In other words, if you use 50% of the battery today, charge it, then use 30% tomorrow and charge it again, and finally use 20% the next day, this will correspond to a full battery cycle, even though the Mac has been charged three times and the battery level never drops below 50%.

But what about the MacBook Neo?

According to Applethe new MacBook Neo has a 36.5 watt-hour lithium-ion battery, which Apple says is enough to keep it running for up to 16 hours of video streaming and up to 11 hours of wireless web browsing.

According to the document, the MacBook Neo has a maximum number of cycles 1000meaning that after 1000 battery cycles, it will be “considered dead” and will need to be replaced.

Importantly, this does not mean that the battery will immediately stop charging after reaching the 1,000-cycle limit, but rather that its ability to retain charge and deliver power will be significantly worse than before.

How much is that in practical terms?

This will of course vary greatly depending on how you use your Mac. In practical terms, if you go through one full battery cycle every day, it will still take about 2.7 years to reach the 1000 cycle mark.

For lighter use, around 0.3 cycles per day, this timeline can be extended further to around nine years.

Finally, the 1,000 battery life is the highest Apple currently offers, and puts the MacBook Neo on par with most MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air models Apple has sold since 2009. Prior to that, battery count limits ranged from 300 to 500.

Where can I check the battery cycle count on my Mac?

Here are Apple’s official instructions for checking your Mac’s battery cycle count:

1. Hold down the Option key and click the Apple menu  , then select System Information.
2. In the Hardware section of the System Information window, select Power. The current cycle count is listed in the Battery Information section.
