Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 introduces a new mystery

Introducing Titan X

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a show that features two timelines. The present timeline in season 1 mostly takes place in 2015, one year after the events of the 2014 film. Godzilla. Step-siblings Keith Randa (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe) team up with May Olowe-Hewitt (Kiersey Clemons) to find their missing father Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira). The trio eventually cross paths with Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell), an ex-soldier who joins the Monarch in the early 1950s.

Things can get a little confusing here. Kurt Russell plays Lee Shaw in the present, and his son Wyatt Russell plays the same character in the past. A past version of Lee teams up with scientist Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto) and cryptozoologist Bill Randa (Anders Holm) to investigate and find the Titans in hopes of preventing the attacks. If the name Bill Randa sounds familiar, it’s the same character John Goodman played in 2017. Kong: Skull Island.

Outside of exposition, this is where things happen in season 2. The majority of season 2 takes place in 2017 on Skull Island, which Monsterverse fans will quickly recognize as Kong’s home. After going after Godzilla in season 1, Kong immediately springs into action in season 2 and attacks the Apex facility to establish dominance.

However, Kong isn’t the real antagonist this season. This designation refers to Titan X, a giant sea creature that will cause trouble for the monarch. Titan X has an army of Sea Scarabs, tiny crustaceans that do all the dirty work on the beach. If it was ForeignersThe Titan X queen will be a xenomorph, and the sea scarabs will be face-huggers. In other words, people are having trouble with Titan X on stage.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is more grounded than the movies

A different form of storytelling in the Monsterverse

There is a simplicity to it Monsterverse movies I rated. The first two films in the shared universe—Godzilla and Kong Skull Island—emphasized human drama more than monster sequences. Especially the last three movies Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empireadopted a more action-oriented approach. I imagine the writers thought, “What if we let Godzilla and Kong share the screen and fight other monsters?”

Sometimes viewers want to turn off their brains for two hours and run away from their problems. Watching Godzilla and Kong wreak havoc is pretty fun. There is value in watching giant monsters fight – the latter two Godzilla x Kong the films have grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

On the contrary, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has big Titans, but it’s stylistically a left turn compared to action movies in the Monsterverse. Obviously, the Titans look great throughout the series, but Monarch takes a more fundamental approach. In a sense, it is a family drama of two brothers searching for their father. In other ways, it’s a tale of human behavior—how does a society survive knowing that the threat of wolves exists? After a monster attacks a town, Monarch explores the physical and emotional consequences of its destruction. Humans, not Titans, drive the story, resulting in a compelling character drama.

A spin-off is on the way

While the third season Monarch: Legacy of Monsters possible, the next TV show in the Monsterverse will be a spin-off. In December 2025 Apple has announced an untitled Lee Shaw spin-off serieswith executive producer Wyatt Russell reprising his role Monarch. Producer Joby Harold will serve as the spin-off’s showrunner and creative host for the entire Monsterverse on Apple TV.

According to the synopsis, the spin-off will be set in 1984 and will follow Lee “on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from releasing a monstrous new Titan large enough to destroy the United States and turn the tide of the Cold War.” A Cold War spy thriller involving the Titans? Sign me up. Leave the monster fights for the movies and keep the character driven stories for the TV shows.

New episode Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 will air on Apple TV every Friday until May 1, 2026.
