V8 muscle cars Have a timeless appeal that goes far beyond the quarter mile. Enthusiasts love them for their sound, power, aggressive styling and emotional connection that other cars can’t match.
Even in an automotive world increasingly reliant on forced induction and electrification, there’s something special about a naturally aspirated V8. Even casual car enthusiasts instantly recognize the legendary engines in these cars. Dodge gave us the Hemi. Chevrolet has a family of LS engines. And of course there’s the Ford 5.0. And this is just a small sample of the most popular V8 engines.
So naturally, if you were shopping for a used V8 muscle car, you’d be looking at something from Dodge, Chevrolet, or Ford.
The problem is, if you only focus on these three brands, you’re missing a major player in the V8 muscle car game. That player is Lexus.
I know many people associate Lexus with the sleek and comfortable “luxury barges” used to take retirees to the golf course. While they certainly build and sell plenty of cars known for quiet luxury, that’s not their business (remember, this is the company that gave us the V10-powered LFA).
I found a clean, single owner car next to me
Right now, there are plenty of old-school, naturally aspirated V8 muscle cars available from Lexus for under $30,000.
In this price range, you’re looking at early IS F models with a 416-horsepower V8. Here in the Greater Philadelphia area where I’m based, I have dozens available locally or for delivery on my CarGurus app.
At the low end of the price range, I found a 2008 IS F in Laurel, Maryland for $12,500 with 307,000 miles. This car has a clean title but has been in an accident on Carfax and high miles. But you can’t argue with the price.
At the top end of the price range was the 2008 IS F in Chantilly, Virginia for $21,493 with 171,000 miles. It is a clean car, without any accidents.
Toyota 2UR-GSE
The engine that puts the muscle in a muscle car
It doesn’t roll off the tongue like “Coyote” or “Rat Motor” or other popular American V8 engine family monikers, but Toyota’s 2UR-GSE V8 is just as impressive.
This engine has been around for nearly 20 years and powers high-performance Lexus models including the IS F, RC F, GS F and more. LC 500. A larger displacement version even powers the Lexus RC F GT3 race car. It was co-developed with Yamaha and features a D-4S engine that combines direct in-cylinder and port injection. This combination gives the engine the best possible mix of performance, emissions control and economy.
Power figures have varied slightly over the years in various applications, but this engine is generally good for around 470 horsepower and 389 lb-ft. torque, even solid numbers the horsepower-driven times we live in today. And of course, like everything from Toyota and Lexus, the 2UR-GSE has proven to be reliable. When it comes to engines and performance cars, the 2UR-GSE is as good as it gets.
High-end performance from Lexus
Available in several body styles for all budgets
Lexus has released the powerful V8 in everything from coupes like the RC F to compact and midsize sedans like the IS F and GS F. LC 500 coupe and convertible. This gives you several body style options and price points to choose from.
An early IS F can be had for under $30,000. Newer LC 500 models will be in the low six-figure range. If you’re looking for a sleeper sedan that can comfortably haul the family around town, the GS F is for you. For those looking for a stylish top to ride along the coast, the LC 500 Convertible would be the perfect ride.
Simply put, Lexus has more V8-powered muscle car options than you might imagine.

Lexus combines power with a unique ownership experience
The typical American muscle car offers plenty of driving thrills, but the cars are a bit rough, at least compared to the Lexus. Lexus muscle cars give you the thrill of a V8, but with refined build quality and premium materials. Lexus proves that you can have luxury and a throaty V8 in the same car.
This luxury experience extends beyond the car to the dealership experience. in the year 2025 JD Power US Customer Service Index StudyLexus ranked second only to Porsche in the Premium brand segment. In the mass market segment, both Ford and Dodge were below average, and Chevrolet ranked seventh.
Despite the premium feel, the Lexus still has the performance to earn its muscle car moniker. according to Car and driverwith a six-speed manual, the Ford Mustang GT will hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and run through the quarter mile at 114 mph in 12.5 seconds. The Lexus RC F (albeit with an eight-speed automatic) can hit 100 mph in 4.1 seconds and complete the quarter in 12.7 seconds at 113 mph. The Mustang will top out at 155 mph, while the Lexus will top out at 170 mph.

It might not be a traditional muscle car, but it might be an ideal one
Traditional American muscle cars still deserve a lot of credit. Badges like the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro remain incredibly attractive options. This is especially true since many of them offer manual transmissions, which are a favorite among enthusiasts. That’s something you won’t find in a V8-powered Lexus lineup.
But if you’re looking for something different from the usual muscle car crowd, the V8 Lexus deserves a place on your short list. Cars like the Lexus RC F and Lexus IS F combine naturally aspirated power with the brand’s renowned craftsmanship and refinement to create a driving experience that feels both muscular and sophisticated.
If you’re still not sure, find a tunnel, roll down the windows and listen to the LC 500 at full throttle. The roar from the 5.0-liter V8 is one of the most intoxicating sounds in the modern automotive world. Your friends probably won’t believe the noise is coming from a Lexus, but that’s the point. It’s a reminder that beneath the luxury and refinement is a true muscle car with a personality all its own.
