Google quietly announced Wear OS 6.1 today, bringing a small but useful location-based time feature that probably should have come sooner.
Visually, Google hasn’t revealed any UI changes with Wear OS 6.1, but it has confirmed that the update is based. Android 16Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) at the API level 36.1. This is not the latest March Android 16 QPR3 updateon the other hand, Android 16 QPR2 builds from December 2025.
However, Wear OS 6.1 brings some new features. One of the main additions as detailed in Google Android Developers blog postis location-based time zone detection. Google says that smartwatches running Wear OS 6.1 and above can now automatically set the time zone based on their physical location.

Currently, Wear OS smartwatches rely on their paired Android phones to determine the time zone. With Wear OS 6.1, that changes, as watches can now update their time zone independently. Google notes that this helps keep accurate time when traveling between regions, even without a network connection.
Users will be able to set this feature by clicking on it Go to Settings > Date & Time > Use Location.
Additionally, Wear OS 6.1 introduces some improvements for child accounts. There’s a new “Kids Leave” feature that allows supervised accounts to switch to regular accounts once the user reaches the appropriate age.
Google has also improved support for re-authentication. If a user’s credentials are invalid, such as changing their password, they can now re-verify their Google account directly on the watch or through a companion app, without the need to factory reset the device.
As of now, Google has not rolled out Wear OS 6.1 to any smartwatch yet. He is expected to reach first place Pixel Watch 4 and then expand to older Pixel Watch models in a future update. Samsung is also expected to adopt Wear OS 6.1 Galaxy Watch lineup soon. We’ll update this as soon as it goes live.
