Google Messages 10 billion, Phone app 5 billion


Google Messages and Phone by Google have reached major milestones in the Play Store.

Google Messages Passed 1 billion downloads May 2020 and reached 5 billion September 2023. Android’s default SMS and RCS client currently has more than 10 billion downloads, according to the Play Store today.

In the intervening period, Samsung It pushed Galaxy users to Google Messages on its own programwhile Verizon was another notable coup. In September 2024Apple introduced RCS support for iPhone end-to-end encryption comes next.

Other first-party apps with more than 10 billion downloads include: Google (Search) app, YouTube, Google Photos, Google Chrome, Gmail, Gboard, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Meet, Google TV, Android Auto, Speech recognition and synthesis, Android Accessibility Suite, and Android Switch.

Meanwhile, Phone by Google the app recently surpassed 5 billion downloads. Most of the new features these days are for Pixel devices, but all phones benefit from the Calling Cards and Material 3 Expressive redesign.

Other apps with 5 billion downloads include: Google Files, Google Calendar, YouTube Music, Contacts, Google Play Games, Google Assistant, Digital Wellbeing and Operator services.
