As I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, gas prices right now are, uh…not good! A month ago, the average price of regular, unleaded gas was about $2.90 a gallon. Today it is above $3.90 and climbing. Where I live in Michigan, regular gas sells for $4.00/gallon and up.
There’s no sign that prices are going to drop anytime soon, so we’re going to be dealing with higher gas prices for a while. The good news? The Google Maps app There’s an old, often forgotten trick to help you find the cheapest gas in your area on your Android phone.

How to look up gas prices on Google Maps

Joe Maring / Android Authority
Gas prices have been available on Google Maps since 2015, so it’s far from a new feature. However, if you’ve never looked up gas prices on Google Maps, or simply forgot the option was available, they’re very easy to find.
To do this, simply open Google Maps or search for the word “gas” in the search bar, or tap the Gas icon below it. Once you do that, Google Maps will show you all the gas stations near you. As you can see, the list for each location includes the current price per gallon of regular gas at that station.
If you click on a gas station to learn more about it, you will find a more complete list of prices for the different types of fuel that the station sells – for example, medium, premium and diesel.
And that’s pretty much it. If you want to look up gas prices in a nearby city to see if there’s a better deal elsewhere, just use the map to navigate to a new area and search for gas again. Alternatively, you can also search for gas prices in other cities/towns this way by using the search bar and searching for “(City name) gas”.
Are gas prices on Google Maps accurate?

Finding gas prices on Google Maps couldn’t be easier. But can you trust the prices it shows you?
In my area, gas prices for major stations like BP, CITGO, Shell, and Speedway match the prices on GasBuddy and the real prices at the stations. At least, most of the time. Some station prices are updated more slowly than others, especially for non-conventional gas types. If a price is potentially out of date, Google Maps marks it with an asterisk indicating that the price is “from 24+ hours ago”.
There are also some gas stations that don’t show prices on Google Maps at all. At least where I live, that’s mostly supermarkets with gas stations attached, including Sam’s Club, Costco, Walmart, and Meijer.
Additionally, unlike some gas price apps (such as GasBuddy), Google Maps’ gas prices are not user-editable. Only Google monitors and updates gas prices on Google Maps, and there is no way to suggest an edit.
In short, your mileage will vary based on how much you use Google Maps gas pricing. Like some, I was very pleased with his performance my colleagues Android Authority. It’s not as powerful as a dedicated gas price app, but it’s a lot easier than fiddling with another app on your phone — especially if you’re already using Google Maps for navigation.
