ChatGPT It received a lot of negative attention after announcing its partnership with the US Department of Defense, which took the job from Anthropic after the latter company refused to back down on some security protocols. Since then, many people have considered leaving, and I personally ended my ChatGPT relationship for good. This was partly due to the company’s latest news, but to be honest, I’m more and more concerned about OpenAI’s evolution as a company when it comes to privacy and security.
I won’t tell you whether or not you should do the same because that’s a very personal decision. That said, if you’re thinking about quitting, there are a few things you should consider first. Here are the main steps I took before migrating to Cloud, although they generally apply to any AI tool you choose to migrate to. Twins.

The first thing you’ll want to do is get a copy of your existing ChatGPT data. While OpenAI isn’t a perfect process, it makes it easy to back up your complete chat history.
Follow these steps to make a backup:
OpenAI will then send you an email about the data export. This required time may vary. As someone with an extensive chat history, it took about two days the first time.
What do I mean by “first time”? As I said, the process is not perfect. My original export is broken, probably because I have more past conversations than I care to admit. It took another day on the second try, but this version is actually more complete.
To view the notes, go to the location where you downloaded the archive. Inside you’ll find an HTML file that lets you read everything in a more navigable way. If it doesn’t make sense, there are two possible fixes.
The first is to try a different browser. With a large file, it simply does not display properly in your default browser. For example, I couldn’t load it in Chrome, but there was no problem in Firefox. If that doesn’t work, your backup may be corrupted and you’ll need to start the process over.

If you’ve used your AI assistant meaningfully and regularly, there’s a good chance the experience will be quite personalized. The good news is that you can change tools without a complete restart. Anthropic has an official guide recommended for those making the switch Claudehowever, I found that it did not capture as much detail as I had hoped.
There are two ways to be more thorough. First, you can go Settings > Personalization > Manage. This gives you a search log that you can drag and copy to paste into your tool of choice. You can also delete what ChatGPT knows about you here, which I recommend you do.
ChatGPT has spent a lot of time getting to know you, so don’t let this information go to waste!
I did the method above along with the method I recommended Limited Edition Jonathan. Like Anthropic’s command, this gives you a structured result, but it doesn’t tell you what ChatGPT you left out, and gives richer, more detailed results. Demand categorizes memoirs into categories such as writing style, key people, personal context, and workflow examples.
After I received a response from ChatGPT, I pasted it into a Google Doc, then added my handwritten notes to the appropriate categories. There was a fair amount of redundancies, but I caught a few things that the offer alone missed.
The next step is to import this into your new tool. You can simply start a new conversation, explain what you are doing, and ask him to commit these ideas to his memory. There’s also a built-in import tool if you’re switching to Clod like I did.
Go to the bottom right, your name, then press Sinfo > Features. you will find a Start importing button with a field where you can paste your data directly.

While a full backup will theoretically contain all of your history, it can be difficult to navigate. So I went through my conversations and saved the ones I wanted to keep. I used Ctrl+P (or the Print option in Chrome’s three-dot menu) to save them as PDFs.
These were much faster to navigate than a full HTML viewer, and loading a PDF into Clo made it easy to pick up where I left off. It won’t import the full chat log, but it works well as a reference and a way to keep up with ongoing projects.
Other options include third-party plugins or simple copy and paste. The PDF route was the fastest for me.

Now it’s time to delete your data. Before doing this, make sure that your exported data is loaded and not corrupted.
You’ll want to go here to delete all of your chat history Settings > Data Controls > Delete All Conversations. This will delete everything, but remember this OpenAI says this could take a month or more to actually delete the data from the servers and that some of them will remain in the system for security or legal reasons or that the data is already used for training after identification.
While not strictly required, it’s not a scary idea to go either privacy.openai.comclick Make a Privacy Request, and select Delete my ChatGPT account. This will ensure full account closure and support consumer privacy frameworks in several countries. Do not do this until you have canceled your subscription and completed all the necessary steps in this guide.

If you’ve previously connected to Google Drive or another external service, cancel that access as a precaution. Go to Settings > Apps and remove existing integrations from there. Even if you don’t forget, it’s unlikely that OpenAI will be able to easily access these permissions after you close the account, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

All that remains is to cancel your subscription, which can be done from the ChatGPT Plus web interface or app. Those paying through the App Store or Google Play must cancel directly through the respective platform. As for where to go from here? Personally, I really enjoy Claude, but Google Gemini is easily my second recommendation. This is especially true for those looking to get the most out of Android-based AI experiences.
