A win for everyone, especially retail workers
In my previous life, I worked as a tech support at a phone store, fixing software issues on countless smartphones and tablets. Often, customers brought in iPhones that could not be repaired on-site. In these cases, we had to send the phone for diagnostics through the store’s repair program. After a technician looks at the iPhone, we’ll get a quote for the repair. If the customer accepts it, the device will be fixed, but the whole process will take at least three weeks.
Being without a device like an iPhone for so long is frustrating, especially if it’s used for work. From experience, retail staff often bore the brunt of customer frustration with these long turnaround times.
Now with “Repair Assistant”. iOS 18this frustration will be largely a thing of the past. Customers will have more flexibility to repair their iPhones because third-party repair shops will be able to integrate a used original part without sending the device to Apple. This reduces the risk of compatibility issues with parts and saves valuable time for the customer.
Ultimately, this new change is good for everyone. Customers will enjoy faster repairs and retailers can direct them to local repair services or, if they are comfortable, customers can buy the part and attempt the repair themselves.
