AI skeptics may also be pleased to hear that the company is putting the brakes on Copilot. keyboard for the humble notepad.exe over the past few years (even though the look and capabilities of the standalone Kopilot app have changed quite dramatically from iteration to iteration). Davuluri said Microsoft will be “more intentional” about where Copilot appears and how it works, specifically promising to “reduce unnecessary Copilot entry points, starting with apps like Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad.”
Davuluri also said that Microsoft will begin testing less disruptive Windows updates that will (temporarily) give users more options to bypass them; “a faster and more reliable File Explorer,” “quieter defaults” for the Widgets section, and better descriptions for the various Windows Insider Program channels and improved mechanisms for sending feedback to Microsoft.
In addition to these specific short-term changes, Davuluri also listed a broader laundry list of goals, including more reliable operation for Bluetooth and USB peripherals, faster and more accurate searching, reduced memory usage, and improved responsiveness and performance for key Windows components such as the Start menu, taskbar, and File Explorer.
These are all nice-sounding promises, though the specifics will be very important — being “more intentional” about Copilot, for example, still leaves room for Microsoft to force intentionality into each of Windows’ built-in programs. And one major concern, the mandatory Microsoft Account login requirement, is not mentioned anywhere in this post. But Microsoft is at least moving in the right direction.
Windows 10 continues to be popular despite its end of support date of October 2025, and one year of additional free security updates It gave people who wanted to keep Windows 10 a way to do so without being exposed to security holes. But we’re already halfway through that year, which means a Windows 11 update is probably in your future one way or another. Hopefully, Microsoft’s repeated commitment to quality means the OS will be more welcoming by October.
