Motorola Razr Fold vs. Razr Ultra 2025: Design and display
Now that we have some official numbers, we can put things into perspective. Ours practical Time with the Razr Fold During CES, we had a very positive impression of the build quality. When unfolded, it is 4.7mm thick, which is slightly thicker than it is Galaxy Z Fold 7. When folded, it’s still a respectable 10.1mm. Both of these figures are significantly lower than the Razr Ultra 2025, which measures 7.2mm and 15.7mm when unfolded and folded. Since the Razr Fold’s footprint is larger, there’s more room to spread out components, which is a luxury flip phones rarely happens.
The Razr Fold gets an IP49 rating for protection against extreme water ingress, which is slightly better than the Razr Ultra’s IP48 rating. It’s a pretty heavy phone at 243 grams, making it significantly heavier than the Razr Ultra 2025’s 199 grams.
The displays are impressive and significantly larger than the Razr Ultra 2025. The Razr Fold has an 8.1-inch foldable POLED display and a 6.6-inch external POLED. There is a 120Hz refresh rate for the internal display, while the external panel has a 165Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness is double that of the Razr Ultra 2025, with both screens reaching 6,000 nits.
Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 is a more compact phone when folded and takes up less space in your pocket. This version gets several design improvements over its predecessor, such as a stronger hinge and new finishes such as wood and Alcantara. While it’s slightly thicker than the Razr Fold when folded or unfolded, the smaller size doesn’t make it too obvious.
The Razr Ultra opens up to a pretty big 7-inch screen, but it’s taller than it is wide, so the total screen area is still less than the Razr Fold. Unlike the Fold, the Razr Ultra 2025’s display can reach an impressive 165Hz. Peak brightness is also quite good at 4500 nits. The Ultra 2025 has one of the best external displays for a flip phone. This 4-inch AMOLED panel can also operate at a frequency of 165 Hz and provides 3000 nits of brightness.
Motorola Razr Fold vs. Razr Ultra 2025: Hardware and specifications
We don’t have a price for the Motorola Razr Fold yet, but based on the specs, we should expect it to cost north of $1,500. Considering the Razr Ultra 2025 retails for $1,299.99, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a $1,700 sticker price for the Fold. Motorola US lists only one variant for this Fold, with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
It’s the chipset in the Motorola Razr Fold Snapdragon 8 Gen 5should not be confused with 8 Elite Gen 5. The former is still a flagship-grade chip similar to the Elite, but with lower clock speeds and a lower-end GPU and modem. Performance should still be better than before Snapdragon 8 Elite On the Razr Ultra 2025.
The Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 is available now officially dropped to $799.99 For the 512GB variant, that makes it a crazy-good value. In fact, Motorola US is currently offering a free upgrade to the 1TB variant for the same price. Battery life is one area where the Razr Fold can destroy the Razr Ultra 2025 due to its physically larger 6,000 mAh capacity. The 4,700mAh battery on the Ultra 2025 is still large for the form factor, so the two may actually be on par when it comes to real-world numbers. The Razr Fold also has bigger and brighter screens, which is where the extra capacity will come in handy.
Both phones have very fast charging, but the Razr Fold Ultra beats it once again. The Razr Fold gets 80W wired and 50W wireless charging, compared to 68W wired and 30W wireless on the Razr Ultra 2025.
Motorola Razr Fold vs. Razr Ultra 2025: Cameras
What sets the Motorola Razr Fold apart in the US market are its cameras. On the back, you get three 50MP sensors, two of which are Sony LYTIA sensors. The telephoto camera offers 3x optical zoom and the digital zoom increases to 100x. If certifications are important to you, the Razr Fold’s cameras have received the “GOLD Camera” seal of approval from DXO Mark. The selfie cameras are also pretty high-quality, with a 20MP sensor on the outside and a 32MP sensor on the inside.
The Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 lacks a telephoto camera, but the rest of the sensors are pretty good. There are two 50MP sensors on the outside for the main and ultra-wide cameras and a 50MP selfie camera. In our review, we found the images captured to be impressive and detailed with decent low-light performance. Built-in artificial intelligence tools allow you to take photos of fast-moving objects quite well, and you can even set customized color profiles. Video recording maxes out at 8K at 30fps, just like the Razr Fold.
Motorola Razr Fold vs. Razr Ultra 2025: Software
Motorola Razr Fold beats Razr Ultra 2025 when it comes to long-term software updates. For the first time ever, we have a Motorola phone that will get seven generations of Android OS upgrades, so it’s about time. Hopefully these will also be timely updates that closely mirror Google’s releases. The Razr Ultra 2025 is only slated for three OS upgrades, which is unfortunate.
Motorola uses the Hello UX skin over Android, which is basically thin. Motorola introduced the Moto AI feature set with the Razr 2025 series, and while some of them were useful, overall we felt it was less mature than what Samsung and Google offered. The Razr Fold should have a similar feature set, with some new software tweaks to take advantage of the larger form factor.
Motorola Razr Fold vs. Razr Ultra 2025: Which one should you buy?
Deciding between the two ultimately comes down to which form factor you’re most comfortable with. The Motorola Razr Fold will undoubtedly be a more expensive phone, but it offers traditional smartphone ergonomics when folded and can expand to tablet size when needed. It has better cameras, a bigger battery and takes longer software updates than the flip.
If you’ve never been a fan of the Galaxy Z Fold series, you probably won’t like the Razr Fold all that much. In that case, now is the best time to grab the Razr Ultra 2025, as Motorola is giving away a 1TB variant for the price of the US 512GB, which is well under $1,000. The Ultra 2025 misses out on things like a telephoto camera and has a smaller battery, but it’s more compact than the Razr Fold, and it’s also cheaper.
Then again, you might want to wait 2026 Razr Ultrait will likely launch before the Fold.
Impressive debut
Razr Fold is the company’s first foldable model in this category and looks very promising. We are now waiting for the release date and price.
Incredible value
With the recent price drop, the Razr Ultra 2025 can be had for under $1,000, making it a great value for a foldable flagship flip.
