Since the release of the CSA Introduction 1.0the floodgates have opened for smart lock manufacturers to release solutions that require just a simple touch to open the lock. Nuki just announced the Keyboard 2 NFC, a feature that adds to the lock you may already have.
The Keyboard 2 NFC from Nuki seems modest. On the surface, it’s just a numeric keypad with a fingerprint reader that can be placed anywhere next to a compatible smart lock. This is nothing new.
New to this pleasing design is an NFC reader attached to the bottom of the keyboard, allowing Nuki’s Keyboard 2 NFC to unlock paired with a simple tap, much like a quick tap used to pay with a credit card.
The keyboard is Aliro certified, a new lock standard developed by CSA to integrate secure standardized communication between different smart home ecosystems. It’s from the same group that makes Matter, which means the devices it works with will work with other Matter devices in your home.
Nuki says The lock works with Apple Home and Samsung SmartThings, though the Aliro standard suggests other wallet apps will gain access in the future. Samsung recently added Digital Home Keys in Samsung Walletadds capability to Galaxy devices in supported regions.
Nuki did not mention that Google Wallet was under review, although the company did say so when requested for comment:
The Aliro standard itself is still at a very early stage. There will be continuous improvements in the future and Nuki is constantly working with wallet providers to improve interoperability.
Google Wallet is eligible to support Aliro smart locks, but unlike Samsung, the company has not yet rolled out full support. When that happens, existing devices may start supporting Google Wallet’s own digital keys.
The Keyboard 2 needs a compatible Nuki Matter-enabled lock for NFC to work, so users must have Smart Lock installed from the company. Users will also need a suitable hub to connect the device to Matter. The lock itself fits the Matter as a standalone product, but this new Keyboard 2 option is a little more limited in use right now, as it uses Aliro to unlock contactless. This may change in the near future.
If you’re not using one of the wallet apps, the Nuki app also provides NFC access. If you want to go old school, it’s on top of the code and fingerprint login. It requires two batteries for a year’s power and can be secured wirelessly within range of the Nuki Smart Lock.
The Nuki Keypad 2 NFC goes on sale today for $179 company website and Amazon. The Lock + Keypad 2 package is also available for $289.
