Exclusively on Windows Centralnow we know what Microsoft CEO is Satya Nadella and new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said while addressing Xbox employees during an internal Q&A about Microsoft’s vision for gaming.
There’s plenty to discover from our executive editor Jez Corden’s report, but I’ll do my best to break down some of the biggest nuances as clearly and concisely as possible.
In an inside Q&A at Xbox, Satya Nadella sat down with new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. In contrast to his usual outfit, Satya wore an Xbox-branded hoodie and portrayed the game as one of Microsoft’s key personalities.
There are key personalities in this company. I don’t think Microsoft would exist without these personalities continuing to evolve. We are a platform company, a developer company. Become a knowledge worker company and game. These are the core personalities that Microsoft has always envisioned and envisioned.
Satya Nadella – CEO of Microsoft
Satya’s recognition of the importance of the Xbox and how central it is to Microsoft as a consumer-facing product is refreshing. It’s something that many fans, myself included, don’t always fully recognize.
Satya takes it a step further and jokes that if it wasn’t for gaming, NVIDIA might not exist. It’s something Jensen says he often jokes with Huang about.
“The transition from that excellence to the rest of the company is simple. I joke with (NVIDIA CEO) Jensen Huang that if it wasn’t for gaming, (NVIDIA) wouldn’t exist. Think about it, without them DirectXI don’t think the whole GPU revolution or acceleration is going to happen.
The wider Q&A reads like Satya stepping in to reassure the Xbox team. He acknowledges the company’s legacy and recent missteps, even noting that he’s seen backlash online, reinforcing that gaming isn’t just a consumer product for Microsoft.
To me, we’ve been playing the game for a long time. We will continue to invest and always will.
Satya Nadella – CEO of Microsoft
It should also be noted that the recent claim that Satya Nadella gave Asha Sharma a “blank cheque” to fix the Xbox is not true.
Microsoft’s lead communications executiveFrank Shaw, He answered the claim about X and pushing straight back said:
“This: Asha Sharma has my full trust and has a BLANK CHECK to restore the trust of Xbox and fans at all costs.” It was not said.”
Microsoft’s leadership is putting real weight behind the game, and Satya Nadella’s “in the game for the long haul” message adds another layer to the company’s long-term strategy. Xbox’s role within Microsoft continues to evolve, and this latest discussion highlights just how central the platform is.
