The latest upcoming version of NVIDIA Super Resolution software DLSS 5 was announced last weekand the reveal became one of the hottest stories in the game for all the wrong reasons. Graphics and AI-focused company showed how the technology uses generative AI to enhance in-game scenes with photorealistic lighting.
What he hoped would be a crowd-pleasing slam dunk for its release this fall turned out to be a disaster. Both players and developers were shocked DLSS 5 makes characters look like they’ve passed through an extraordinary artificial intelligence filter and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang only made things worse telling consumers they are “completely wrong”. He then back pedal.

I can imagine that in the future, developers will be able to train this technology for a specific art style or specific people’s faces, eliminating expensive raytracing, etc. can replace It’s just a bit of a weird start. There’s no way the haters can stop it. That’s more than a soap opera effect on every TV… https://t.co/SUdxhy6ArjMarch 23, 2026
Vavra has previously spoken about generative artificial intelligence, which has been retiredWhile he’s “not a fan of AI-generated art,” he said he believes it’s not going anywhere and that it’s “time to face reality.” then, Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios was widely criticized uses AI to generate art references for concept artists while they work on their upcoming RPG Divinity. In response to heat, Larian stopped short of using AI for the idea.
I am not one to be bought happy About anything related to successful AI, you think, but honestly? I think Vavra is right in this matter. DLSS 5 can look pretty bad with character faces, but in the samples and comparisons we’ve seen, it’s made changes to environments that look pretty impressive.
12 minutes of enhanced gameplay footage of DLSS 5 Starfield Vavra’s quote-repost is a good example of this. Xbox and Bethesda‘s 2023 RPG is somewhat famous for flat lighting in many “normal” areas with no dramatic lighting, but DLSS 5 brought a lot of natural depth to it and made it pop.
Therefore, I believe we will see developers supporting and interacting with DLSS 5, intending to exploit its potential by tailoring the output to the look and feel of their games. without Like NVIDIA’s demo, it pushed things into uncanny valley territory.
Finally, I’d be okay with developers retaining full control over how their projects look in official vanilla versions of DLSS 5. Creative control should always remain with the creators of the game.
I don’t always agree with Daniel Vavra’s opinions – and he is quite opinionated – but I believe he is right about this. DLSS 5 no matter how horribly messed with character faces does show potential and I think it’s something developers will want to capitalize on.
How that is youthough? Do you agree with Daniel Vavra or do you think he’s wrong and DLSS 5 won’t catch on? Let me know in the comments and vote in our poll.
