Spring has sprung, at least for those north of the equator. That means I got to see the sun a few times in England, the NCAA tournament is taking over offices in the US, and we at Windows Central can look forward to news about the next wave of Surface devices.
Usually inside Windows WrapI look back at the week’s biggest stories and comment on a trending topic. But this week I’m doing something a little different. Instead of looking back, I look forward to Microsoft’s upcoming Surface announcements.
For those wondering, new Surface PCs are coming this spring. So if you’re thinking of buying a current gen model, wait a few more weeks.March 23, 2026
Our Editor-in-Chief, Zac Bowden, recently shared that information while giving advice on when to buy a Surface PC. The upcoming announcement of new Surface hardware is one of several reasons for this now is a terrible time to buy a Surface.
There’s very little in the way of what’s on the road, so what I’ll focus on instead should do on the way and what Microsoft needs To save the Surface brand.
To be clear, I don’t think the Surface brand needs saving in terms of revenue. But Microsoft has to fight complacency, inconsistency and boredom with hardware.
Before I dive in, here’s a quick recap of the week’s biggest stories from the world of Windows 11.
Weekly Windows Pack: Big News
Stop surface releases
Microsoft needs to consolidate releases of Surface devices regardless of what kind of chips those computers use. If the Surface Pro 12 is announced, Microsoft should ship the Snapdragon X and Intel versions at the same time.
The Intel-powered Surface Pro 11 for Business shipped six months after the consumer-focused Snapdragon-X powered Surface Pro 11.
Most likely Snapdragon X2 and Intel Core Ultra 3 processors will be options on some new Surface hardware in some format. A stair release puts whichever runner-up is at a disadvantage.
Let people choose Surface PCs with Intel or Snapdragon X
I like Snapdragon-X powered PCs. They fit my workflow well and if I were to buy a new laptop in the market today, I would buy it. A few best windows laptops Throw in the Snapdragon X processors, so I’ll be spoiled for choice.
But some people still need or prefer computers equipped with Intel chips. Microsoft knows this, of course, which is why there are Intel-powered Surface PCs marketed as “For Business” devices.
I appreciate Microsoft’s efforts to advance ARM64-based computing technology. Windows 11 has improved a lot in this area over the past few years, and Microsoft sent a strong message by putting Snapdragon X chips in its flagship devices.
I believe the message has been received that OEMs are making great Snapdragon X PCs, and Microsoft can remain part of the pack.
But if Microsoft is going to make Intel and Snapdragon X versions of its Surface PCs, it needs to offer them to everyone side-by-side.
Stop protecting surface properties
If you want an anti-reflective coating on the Surface Pro 11, you should choose the “For Business” model with an Intel chip. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next generation.
Our editor-in-chief said Microsoft should have used anti-reflective displays on Surface PCs six years ago. Why do we have to keep asking this?
a Reddit post by user “WearHeadphonesPlease” user lists ways the next Surface Pro will be perfect. The best item on their list is the anti-reflective coating.
I agree, although I’ll go a step further and say that the Snapdragon X and Intel versions should share the same design and specs overall. People don’t have to choose between processor and display.
Even MacBook NeoStarting at $599, the display has a non-reflective coating. It would be a shame to ship the flagship Surface without a similar cover.
Bring back “one more thing”.
The surface is stuck in a loop of elegance. The new devices have slimmer bezels, better chips and look great, but they lack sexiness.
A surface event used to guarantee something interesting that you didn’t expect. The Surface book its screen will turn off or a Surface Laptop Studio switches to a different mode.
When Surface Neo and Surface Duo decorated the stage, it was exciting. These devices advanced what personal computers could do, while also getting people talking.
With all the technology available these days, Microsoft needs to stand out. Fold the screen into a quarter, add two Surface Pros to make a supercomputer, something. Just give us more than “we’ve updated what you’ve seen before”.
