OpenAI has added plugin support to its agent coding software Codex in an apparent attempt to match similar features offered by competitors Anthropic (Claude Code) and Google (Gemini’s command-line interface).
What OpenAI calls “plugins” are actually packages that can contain skills (“hints to Codex that describe workflows” – a standard feature in tools like this these days), application integrations, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers.
The idea is that they allow Codex to be configured in certain ways so that specific tasks are easier for the user and repeatable across multiple users in the organization.
In general, they do not allow anything that was not possible before. Power users can now provide custom instructions, use MCP servers, and more to create much of this functionality. But in this case, it’s basically a one-click setup.
The Codex app now has a Plugins section that takes users to a searchable library of plugins that allow Codex to integrate tightly with some external service or application – such as GitHub, Gmail, Box, Cloudflare, and Vercel.
