3 features Google still hasn’t launched: Photos, Gboard

This is a list of features that Google has demonstrated but are yet to launch. This goes a little beyond the slow-rolling features and probably into the teardown area.

Google Photos floating bottom bar

Back in FebruaryGoogle Photos for iOS has introduced a new floating toolbar. There’s a pill for Photos, Collections, and Create, while Search (or Query) is its own circle on the right. Your current tab is highlighted with a pill indicator and accompanied by a small icon.

It looks pretty cool in the context of the photo feed and connects to apps like Google Chat and newer Google Finance.

Google has demonstrated this several times for Android, the most recent being the introduction of Wardrobe. Instead, the Photos app is stuck with a tall Material 3-era bottom bar. The vast majority of first-party software has already been updated. Google Fi, Voice and Passwords + Quick Share (supported by Google Play services) are other obstacles at this point.

Gboard key redesign

In March 2025Gboard has begun testing pill-shaped buttons as an alternative to rounded rectangles. They seem more suited to Material 3 Expressive. This follows Google slowly redesigning various parts of the keyboard parameters and shortcuts (not widespread to stability).

Various app screenshots that Google has released since then have officially shown off the more modern key design, but it’s still not available today. The launch of Android 16 QPR1 and Material 3 Expressive last August seemed like a major launch opportunity.

Gemini Live + Google Messages

At the end of Made by Google 2024, Gemini Live’s ability to use Google Messages to send messages was previewed. This May, Live added support for many more more Related Appsbut Messages remain missing. Giving Gemini Live feature parity with the basic chat experience is a must.
