It’s no secret that the modern video game industry is in a bit of an identity and budget crisis. Massive AAA publishers spend hundreds of millions of dollars and up to a decade in development on hyper-polished blockbusters, many of which fail to recoup their ballooning costs. On the other hand, we have some feel-good stories about this year’s current hit. Mecha Chameleonwhich he just announced he had achieved 15 million sales on Steam in less than a month.
What is Meccha Chameleon?
Two indie developers in Japan it is reported that he spent two monthsyes, it’s only been two months, we’ve been putting together this fun $5 human chameleon coloring game, and it’s impossible not to get the attention of millions of players.
Creator ‘lemorion_1224’ and programmer Haganeiro first met in the Fortnite custom map creator community and together came up with this frivolous, extreme stealth concept.
Players have plain white bodies and must spray paint themselves to match the textures of walls and surroundings to hide from searchers. I’ve even seen an environment modeled after backrooms, so it’s a Gen Z clip-worthy beast of a game. It sounds incredibly simple, but the game’s success trajectory is every indie developer’s dream scenario. It even uses free assetsfor this, the creator expressed his support for the launch of the game.
I’m so happy with Meccha Chameleon’s success because it mirrors my game assets 👀 pic.twitter.com/0uP27UyoU4July 5, 2026
Meccha Chameleon launched on Steam on June 9, 2026 for the low price of $4.79 and took just 4 days to smash 1 million copies sold purely through word of mouth and viral Twitch clips. It’s the latest in the trend of ‘friendslop’ games, not a pejorative term, but meaning a game where the fun is made organically by playing with a group of friends (and it’s a low-budget title). Think Table 1 as another example.
As of June 26th, they’ve sold 10 million copies, and today announced the 15 million copies milestone, one month after its release. At its peak, the game reached 340,000 concurrent players, surpassing Overwatch and Apex Legends.
Now, as inspiring as Meccha Chameleon’s success is, it’s important to remember that not everyone can be next. Balatro or Between us. Tens of thousands of indie games flood Steam every year, and a heartbreakingly small fraction of them make enough money to sustain their creators. That said, when a game this cheap gets thundered, it’s something to celebrate and I’ll be downloading and checking the game out for myself right away!
