OpenAI improves ChatGPT with an all-new GPT-Live voice mode experience

A shiny new model isn’t the only upgrade coming to ChatGPT this week. In addition to tomorrow’s release of GPT-5.6, OpenAI is also announcing a brand new ChatGPT voice mode experience.

Next generation ChatGPT Voice mode is coming

OpenAI announces and demonstrates the next generation of ChatGPT’s voice mode.

Today’s live broadcast includes Kundan Kumar, Yuchen Zhang, Ehsan Asdar and Rithesh Kumar.

Here is a live streaming video that you can watch from home:

OpenAI’s new ChatGPT Voice mode uses GPT-Live-1.

The new voice mode is a major improvement around natural speaking with ChatGPT.

For example, you can talk over it and it will listen while you’re still talking. It can also access the web search for intelligence. He also better understands when to stop talking or listen longer.

GPT-Live Chat is behind the GPT Voice upgrade

“We’re launching GPT‑Live, a new generation of voice models that make talking to AI feel like real conversation,” the company said.

“GPT-Live is built on a full-duplex architecture, meaning it can listen and speak at the same time. During conversations, GPT-Live can show attention with expressions like ‘mhmm’ or ‘yes’, move quickly back and forth, or simply remain silent when it needs a moment to think. The result is an audio experience that makes talking easier.

Users will also be able to set the level of exploration with the new GPT-Live enabled sound experience.

OpenAI has two GPT-Live models to start with

OpenAI adds that GPT-Live consists of two versions to launch: GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1-mini, both of which are rolling out to ChatGPT users worldwide today.

This includes support for iOS, Android and the web. ChatGPT’s desktop app has withdrawn voice mode a few months ago.

GPT-Live-1-mini is the default sound mode for free users, while paid customers of all levels will use GPT-Live-1.

“We’ve optimized GPT‑Live for some of the most popular languages on ChatGPT,” says OpenAI. “For certain languages, the model may have non-native accents or fluency gaps. We are actively working to improve the experience across languages.”

The company also notes that GPT-Live does not support audio with video or screen sharing in ChatGPT during a presentation, but these features are under development. For now they will demand old ChatGPT Voice mode.
