X’s crowdsourced fact-checking system, Community Notes, will be updated to send direct messages to users alerting them when any post they interact with receives a correction. There was a change that was not live yet announced By Elon Musk, owner of X. He did not share a time frame for its launch.
The update tries to address one of the bigger criticisms of Community Notes — that it comes too late for the fixes to matter. A misleading post can garner views and reposts while its accuracy is disputed, and it’s damaging when it’s corrected. By proactively notifying users when a post receives an edit, X tries to extend the reach of the post beyond the original post. It can also allow users who spread false information to exonerate themselves if they have been misled.
X’s Community Notes system was first created when the company was still known as Twitter, before Musk’s acquisition.
The idea was to provide a different way to weed out misinformation on the platform, rather than requiring Twitter (now X) to be a centralized authority for moderation decisions. Instead, Community Notes contributors can suggest corrections and add critical details or missing information to posts. Consensus is achieved when people who rate a record as useful are useful usually have different perspectivesand the recording is broadcast.
There is a similar system from the date of acceptance As part of a broader moderation overhaul by Meta last year, it saw the company cancels its partnership with fact-checkers.
While Community Notes makes sense for a company looking to branch out from the fact-checking business, it’s also proven difficult to scale. A 2025 study of the feature The Spanish fact-checking site Maldita found that 85% of suggested mentions of X remain invisible to users and only 8.3% are published. A separate study A study by the Digital Democracy Institute of America (DDIA) of 1.76 million records published on X between January 2021 and March 2025 put the number of unpublished records at an even higher 90%.
Critics note that this weakens Community Records as a system that uncovers information when it is most needed. What’s more, they argued, people are unaware that a post they’ve seen or boosted has been edited later, because that information hasn’t been brought to their attention.
Musk’s proposal to send alerts to users via X Chat (DM) would solve the latter problem, at least assuming it goes live. X was reached for comment, but a response was not immediately available.
