M7 Ultra to potentially have up to 1.5TB of RAM and finally match 2019 Mac Pro: report

according to the latest Power On newsletter From Mark Gurman, Apple is set to include up to 1.5TB of RAM in its upcoming M7 Ultra chip. This means that Apple Silicon will finally be compatible with the highest RAM configuration available in the 2019 Intel Mac Pro.

The amount of RAM available on Apple Silicon Macs has always been a limitation because Apple solders the RAM to the same die as the processor, allowing for extremely high transfer speeds. This is what makes single memory possible. Of course, this also means that the amount of RAM is limited by how big the chipset is.

However, according to Mark Gurmanit looks like Apple is finally going to close that gap. The company is preparing the configuration of the M7 Ultra chipset with 1.5 TB of RAM:

The new Ultra is designed to support 1.5 terabytes of storage – roughly double the capacity of the M5 Ultra – although whether or not Apple will offer this configuration will depend on the state of the industry. A widespread shortage of memory chips made the component harder to find and more expensive.

It notes that it may not launch with 1.5TB of RAM due to ongoing memory shortages. Nevertheless, Apple is developing the M7 Ultra to support it.

Earlier this year, Apple discontinued the 512GB configuration of the M3 Ultra Mac Studio. Then followed the suspension 256 GB configuration – leaving 96GB as the only option for the top-end Mac Studio. If you buy the M4 Max instead, you can configure up to 128 GB.

Apple will also debut a new M5 Ultra chip later this year with up to 768GB of unified storage, a new record for Apple silicon.

Based on Apple’s current RAM pricing (around $25 per additional gigabyte), upgrading from the 128GB base configuration to 1.5TB of RAM will likely cost more than $35,000.
