Waymo said its San Francisco service has been restored after an hour-long outage


Waymo says its robo-taxi service has resumed after making “temporary adjustments” during a power outage in San Francisco. About 7,000 PG&E customers were affected in the city.

According to the screenshot posted on the social networkWaymo told SF customers that service is “temporarily suspended” and that “freeways are unavailable.”

When TechCrunch reached out to the Alphabet-owned company for comment, a spokesperson said, “We are making temporary adjustments to our service while we monitor local conditions. We know drivers are depending on us and we will return to normal operations as soon as possible.”

After this article was originally published, a Waymo spokesperson added that the company “decided to suspend service for approximately one hour to assess the extent of the power outage affecting a large portion of San Francisco and to coordinate with local officials.”

Power outages have affected Waymo’s service in the past, including a number of Waymo vehicles stood on the city streets during lighting in Decemberand when a similar incident paralyzed traffic during the Golden Gate Bridge fireworks display on July 4th.

As a result, there is San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie called for stricter state regulations to adequately address how autonomous vehicles work during major events, whether planned or not.
