YouTube is aware of an issue where picture-in-picture (PiP) mode is not enabled when closing the app on YouTube Android and iPhone.
Some users are having “issues with the picture-in-picture (PiP) feature not working when exiting the YouTube app.” Instead of getting a floating player in the corner to keep watching, YouTube doesn’t display anything and just keeps playing the audio in the background.
Google says that “the vast majority of these reports come from iOS users,” but there are some cases from Android devices. We can reproduce this issue with version 21.28 of the YouTube app on iPhone, but not on our Pixel.
YouTube defined first announced the issue Friday morning (PT) and said “teams are actively investigating the matter.” But by Saturday afternoon, there was no progress. You can follow YouTube Help thread for updates.
Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this!
Earlier this year, YouTube started rolling out PiP for free users all over the world.
