last week, Microsoft has blocked the latest Patch Tuesday update of Windows 11 for a number of Dell PCs. after it was reported that the update was related to Intel’s IPF driver, causing a number of issues such as unexpected shutdowns, overheating, and slow performance.
The company said it is working quickly to fix these issues on the limited number of affected Dell computers now an emergency update beyond KB5121767 has been released Fixes the issue for Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows 11 25H2.
“This OOB update is a cumulative update, so you do not need to apply any previous updates before installing it. Devices affected by this issue and temporarily prevented from receiving the July 2026 security update can now install this OOB update. This OOB update resolves this additional fix along with all improvements from previous security and non-security updates. If this OOB update only affects your device does not show is required”.
Microsoft hasn’t provided a list of devices affected by the issues, but if your computer was able to install the Patch Tuesday update last week, you’re unlikely to be affected. The new emergency patch should be offered by Microsoft to computers that blocked the previous update.
If your computer is affected by the issues, Microsoft says this “a limited number of Dell devices may show a yellow exclamation mark next to the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver (Intel IPF) in Device Manager. In some cases, affected devices may experience changes in performance, power consumption, or system behavior.”
The good news is that most PCs affected by this issue are unlikely to ever experience any issues, as Microsoft immediately blocked the update on affected PCs before this month’s Patch Tuesday became available to them. The only situation where users may experience these issues is if they have installed the June optional non-security preview update or manually downloaded the July Patch Tuesday update.
Microsoft is better at fixing problems before they reach general availability, and today’s emergency out-of-band update is an example of how fast the company is moving to fix problems in Windows OS so users aren’t affected by downtime or bugs.
