After many fancy setups and characters finally reveals who they really are, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power ready to enter the war between the Elves and Sauron when he returns for its third season. We’ll also finally see our friend the Dark Lord create the One Ring that wreaks havoc on Middle Earth for generations.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Rings of Power The cast — Benjamin Walker, aka High King Gil-galad, moderated — and crew took to the Hall H stage to reveal more of what’s to come. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay shared a teaser and detailed the new characters coming in the third season. First, here’s this preview video:
So yeah, there’s a lot to unpack there, but that’s it definitely The One Ring. It’s really happening!
Fans previously learned that Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) Galadriel’s long-lost husband Celeborn and Zubin Varla (Andor) East of Rhun is Khamul.
But at SDCC, it was revealed that Eddie Marsan will be playing Thrain, the older brother of King Durin IV. Andrew Richardson is Anarion, the younger son of Elendil and Isildur’s brother. And Adam Young is Marnukh, a “mysterious orc who may not be what he seems,” according to a Prime Video press release.
And here’s how cool it is: Simon Pegg will voice the Balrog, a fiery creature previously unknown to speak. Other creatures we’ll see in season three include Orcs (obviously), flying fell beasts, and “war elephants known as Mûmakil,” all of which appear in a new teaser.
Hall H was also personally visited by a quartet of “Nazgnagôl” or ring servants. will debut in the third season and certainly cut a menacing presence in the first clip. What the Nazgul or ringwraiths were to the Third Age, they are to the Second Age – still very scary, but not yet in their final form as full ghouls.
A new, more detailed synopsis for the third season: “In the third season, Middle-earth is at war. Five years have passed since the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have roamed the world, conquering everything in their path. Only a few isolated pockets stand between the Dark Lord and total victory – deep in the mountains of Khazad, deep in the seas. And the elven kingdoms protected by the Three Rings of Lindon and Rivendell.
“But deep in the land of Mordor, in the newly built tower of Barad-dur, the Dark Lord toils day and night, intent on wielding a power that will bring his last enemies to their knees: One ring to rule them all… Now all the free peoples of Middle-earth—Dwarves, Elves, Men, and Wizards—must find a way to come together in a race against time to prevent Sauron from achieving his goal of total domination over all life.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season three premieres on November 11 with the first four episodes on Prime Video. Episodes five and six follow on November 18, and episodes seven and eight follow on November 25.
