In a new video, Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Windows+Devices, and Brett Ostrum, Corporate Vice President of Surface, sit down to talk more about what’s next for Surface, including upcoming apps. Surface Laptop Ultrahints at more surprises to come this year and even acknowledges people’s need for a Surface Studio monitor and Surface Mini.
In the 20-minute video, Davuluri and Ostrum discuss the year so far for Surface PCs. They repeat the latest announcements around Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 With surprise announcements around the Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark in June, with Intel and Snapdragon SoCs.
As for what’s next for Surface, Ostrum clarifies that Surface will continue to do what it’s always done; confirm platform progress through hardware. As it has authenticated the Surface with touch, pen and Windows Hello in the past, the company is now focused on using the Surface to verify Windows on the Arm, as seen with the RTX Spark.
“We’re there to show what’s possible from a technology and experience perspective and help lead the way for the ecosystem. These days, that often means helping brand new platforms like RTX Silicon from NVIDIA get off the ground. So I think that’s going to continue for us.”
Ostrum also reminds viewers that Surface still has the Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark this year, and says that more announcements are on the way, though he didn’t go into detail about what that might entail. “We have a few more surprises before the end of the year, so I’m looking forward to it.”
In a segment answering questions submitted by the community, Microsoft also addresses fans’ need for more Surface peripherals, including the Surface Studio monitor. Ostrum admits that the Surface Studio is the best display they’ve ever shipped, but won’t confirm plans to address the demand for a standalone monitor.
“My history is in mice and keyboards, and I believe the Surface Studio display is the best looking display we’ve ever shipped.” Ostrum says before the video cuts to the next question. Could Microsoft be hinting that a Surface Studio monitor is finally in the works?
Another question also asks about the popular Surface Mini, a device that Microsoft came very close to shipping in 2014 before it was canceled at the last minute. A user-submitted question asks if he owns a Surface Mini, and Davuluri says jokingly “I think we have a few lying around.” Ostrum follows “We don’t usually interpret Surface roadmaps that look like the future, Pavan.”
