This the long overdue sequel Mel Brooks’ 1987 cult classic won’t be released until next spring, but that didn’t stop Amazon MGM Studios from putting together an SDCC panel this year in a clever parody of previous extravagant Marvel panels. Since it’s early days, there haven’t been any teasers or trailers released to the public some teaser images was demonstrated at CinemaCon in April and yesterday at SDCC.

Apparently, we owe this sequel to Josh Gad, who wrote the screenplay and introduced Brooks in a cold call. Qad said he showed the original film to his daughter during the COVID-19 pandemic, and she loved it so much that she wanted to see a sequel. Here’s the official synopsis:

Anyway, the Dark Helmet is back! Forty years after the first event Space ballsfifty years after the events Star Wars: A New Hopeand a year after its events The Devil Wears Prada 2The galaxy is in danger again. A menace so evil, unstoppable, utterly devoid of any original ideas, that it has vowed to bring back the past… every last bit of it.

With Lone Starr in hiding, Queen Vespa on the throne, and Schwartz stretched thinner than a franchise theatrically releasing television episodes, the only hope for the galaxy is Vespa’s unruly son, Princess Starburst, and a mysterious Palace advisor named Destiny. Together, they must find Lone Starr, Yogurt, and any other iconic legacy characters fans have been clamoring for, so while you can fight some threats, a reboot isn’t one of them.

100-year-old Brooks reprises the role of Yogurt through motion capture (she recorded her lines in a studio). Also returning: Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Cask, Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Queen Vespa and George Weiner as Colonel Sanders. Pullman’s son, Lewis Pullman, joins the cast as Destiny’s court counselor, along with Lone Starr and Vespa’s son, Princess Starburst, Keke Palmer. Gad plays a mawg, the same species as the late John Candy’s Barf. Anthony Carrigan and Rowan Witt have also been cast in yet-to-be-disclosed roles.

Spaceballs: New It opens in theaters on April 23, 2027. May Schwartz be with you!
