My first smart cameras were Ring cameras and I used them for several years. Rising subscription costs and worrisome privacy issues finally forced me to switch to Reolink, and I wish I had made the move sooner.
Why I bought Ring cameras in the first place
Low cost and easy integration
When you first start looking smart camerasI already owned some Amazon Echo smart displays. Like smart displays, Ring cameras were affordable, especially during Amazon Prime events because Amazon owns the Ring brand.

Rising costs were not the only problem. I became increasingly concerned about privacy; since my camera recordings are stored in the cloud, this meant that video from my home ended up on third-party servers, which didn’t sit well. Amazon has never had the greatest record when it comes to privacy.
Many Ring owners later felt the same the last Super Bowl commercial. The ad featured a feature called Call Search Partyused Ring cameras throughout the neighborhood to find the missing dog. Reaction to the ad was not positive, with people understandably concerned that the same technology could be used to track people and animals.
The worst part was that the feature was enabled by default. Many Ring users were concerned that their cameras were being used to monitor their neighborhood without their express prior consent.
Why I switched to Reolink
Local storage and no subscription
Ultimately, I decided that the increased costs and privacy issues with Ring cameras were too much. it was time replace them with something else.
I knew I wanted two things that the Ring cameras couldn’t give me. I wanted local video storage to avoid sending all the videos from my cameras to the cloud. I also wanted products where you can access key features without paying a subscription.

Relink also offers better privacy. Since my recordings are stored locally and not in the cloud, I don’t have to worry about anything happening to them because they live on third-party servers. Local cameras store recordings outside of Reolink’s servers, so unlike Ring’s Search Party feature, they are unlikely to be used for surveillance without your consent.
Convenience often comes at a price
You don’t have to pay for privacy
Ring cameras seemed like a great option to me at the time because they offered so many conveniences. They worked seamlessly with my Echo displays, which made them even more useful. This comfort came at a cost. Not only the cost of my subscription, but also the cost of my privacy.
