Pints meet major bets: Polymarket’s Situation Room pop-up bar in DC

Outside of the existing power circles in technology and politics, prediction markets continue to face challenges questions about insider trading (Banned by Polymarket rules but it is difficult to apply in any one platform optimized for anonymity) and basic morality placing bets on violent conflicts. In March, Arizona Attorney General Chris Mayes indicted Kalshi conducts illegal gambling operations for offering betting contracts for four elections in the state.

And some prediction market users, like certain sports gamblers, can’t accept the reality that they’re making the wrong bet. Recently, Israeli journalist Emanuel Fabian Polymarket received a number of death threats from its users demanding that Iran change the description of the missile attack to suit its bets; Polymarket said it suspended users after Fabian went public with the harassment.

A third-party survey of cryptocurrency wallet addresses on Polymarket found that only a small minority of users – As low as 7.5 percent to be “high” as 30 percent– show realized profit.

It’s all marketing

In some ways, the marketing at Polymarket’s bar was surprisingly low-key. The place didn’t offer any discounts or freebies to customers who opened an account or installed the platform’s apps, and the menu itself remained unchanged from the bar’s normal incarnation as a sports bar called Proper 21 – capturing the possibility of Polymarket toys in cocktail names.

One of the beers I ordered came in a Situation Room labeled pint glass. The children sitting next to me – I entered into a conversation with them self-driving cars— I offered to steal it, but limited myself to pocketing the Situation Room coaster.

The Situation Room isn’t Polymarket’s first venture into what marketing types call an “activation.” In February, he opened a grocery store in Manhattan that offered free groceries. How many shoppers could fit in a Polymarket branded bag– for three days.

The company told other news outlets that it might Explore creating a longer-term version of The Situation Room. But even if the concept doesn’t appear again, “Will Polymarket do more IRL marketing stunts?” seems like the safest of bets.
