There was a time when gaming on Linux almost amounted to SuperTuxKart, Battle for Wesnoth, and this is it. However, thanks to the efforts of the open source community over the last decade, Linux gaming has gotten even stronger. Now, games using Steam’s Proton compatibility layer on Linux compete with Windows 11’s performance, and it looks like the “best OS for gaming” won’t hold its crown much longer.

A recent study looked at how several popular titles performed on both Windows 11 and CachyOS, a performance-focused Linux distro. While the two put up a great fight, both Cyberpunk 2077 and Space Marine 2 saw some very impressive performance boosts on CachyOS that gamers should take note of.

Cyberpunk 2077 and Space Marine 2 favored Linux

As seen Notebook checkcarried out by the benchmark NJ Tech on YouTubewhich compares Windows 11 with CachyOS on the same PC. According to the statistics on the screen, the computer was running AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and Radeon RX 6700 XT. NJ Tech then published both the average frame rate and the average of the lowest 1% frame rate values for each operating system.

The tests showed very interesting results. In most of the tests, CachyOS won, getting about 3-10% better FPS than Windows 11. In addition, there were very clear wins for CachyOS. First, Space Marine 2 ran smoother on the Linux distro, averaging 81 FPS over Windows 11’s 68 FPS. CachyOS kept things pretty consistent with 72 FPS, down 1% compared to Windows 11’s 58 FPS.

Cyberpunk 2077 was also a solid win for CachyOS as it averaged 98 FPS with a 1% lower 76 FPS. Windows 11 scored an average of 91 FPS and 1% below 63 FPS, making CachyOS the clear winner for rendering very graphically intensive gaming.

However, it wasn’t all good news for CachyOS. Windows 11 managed to pull it together at average FPS in The Division 2, and 4 percentage points higher at 1% minimum. Windows 11 scored a more decisive victory in The First Descendant, averaging 63 FPS and 1% lower than 39 FPS, compared to CachyOS’ average of 54 FPS and 1% lower 38 FPS. However, the writing on the wall is pretty clear: Windows is no longer the undisputed champion of gaming.
