TL; DR
- Renders of what is believed to be the Sony Xperia 1 VIII have surfaced.
- Although the images do not depict the final design, they indicate that there may be a significant change.
- The rumor suggests that the phone will have a larger sensor, which could explain the change in the camera island.
Sony’s Xperia 1 series has remained largely unchanged over the years, with each iteration adopting the same or similar design language as its predecessor. However, that may not be the case for the Xperia 1 VIII. Recently, renders of the device have been circulating and they hint at some big changes compared to them Xperia 1 VII.
A user on the Chinese social media platform Weibo Super_Freak_ Shared renders of the alleged Xperia 1 VIII. The renders reveal a sharp departure from what we’ve come to expect from the Xperia 1 line. In fact, the design is so different that it has led many to question the legitimacy of the renders.
The biggest and most noticeable change is the camera module, which no longer aligns vertically. These three cameras now sit on a square-shaped camera island. The strange thing about this island is that there are several holes surrounding the sensors, which only made me believe that these images could not be real.
Another change is the location of the selfie camera, which is now placed in the center. This camera used to be located near the left side. It is also noteworthy that there is a cutout for this camera. In previous iterations, Sony chose to place the front-facing camera on the top bezel of the display.
While this could easily be dismissed as an April Fool’s Day prank, the Sony Fans Vietnam admin, who has a positive track record with leaks, lends some credence to the renders. The Facebook post notes that this is not the final design of the Xperia 1 VIII. However, the device may feature a redesigned camera module. It is also suggested that the phone will have a physically larger sensor, which could be the reason for the redesigned island.
Despite all the changes, it seems that the headphone jack has remained in place. So the Xperia 1 VIII will still be the best smartphone you can get with a headphone jack.
