As with other platforms, Plex no longer offers free remote play options. Watching outside the home requires either a Plex Pass ($7 per month, $70 per year, or $250 lifetime) or a Remote View Card ($2 per month or $20 per year) as a server owner.
The subscription request came first to mobile devices, Roku players and desktop. On March 23, Plex began enforcing the policy for consoles and other TV operating systems, including LG, Samsung and Vizio sets. The change is expected to cover all television platforms by the end of 2026.
The overhaul includes useful changes such as faster navigation, better use of space, centralized account information, and editing artwork directly from the TV. Music is supported on this Fire TV release, but Plex warns that photo libraries aren’t immediately available and that it will restore support “as soon as possible.”
Why does Plex limit remote streaming?
Plex was direct when they announced their remote playback restrictions in March 2025. The company said it “needs more resources” to develop its vision for personal media playback, including both new features and support for existing capabilities.
At the time, the brand outlined the roadmap it used to justify the need for subscriptions. Plex Pass subscribers would get better filtering for kid-friendly content, while server owners would get dedicated apps that offer better user management. Plex also promised an open programming framework for integrating servers into other products and services.
However, the move drew criticism from users who had to pay for a feature that was previously free. Earlier, there were also complaints about the clumsy user experience.
As before, the easiest way to disconnect from Plex is to subscribe to the Remote Watch Pass. This lets you play remotely from anywhere without paying extra for Plex Pass features you don’t necessarily need, like media downloads, more server control, and login skipping.
