One of the largest and most controversial systems Fate 2 developer Bungie Added to the live service was the looter shooter content skip – a process that saw parts of older content removed from the game when new releases were released following the Beyond Light expansion in 2020.
The studio said the skipping had to be done to keep the game stable, though fans were still unhappy with the content skipping as a result, noting that no other long-running massively multiplayer games had to implement such a system. For many, this is considered an unacceptable removal of content they previously paid for, even though some vaulted content has been returned over time.

So, in other words, Bungie wants to avoid another content dump and intends to keep all of Marathon’s quests and story developments — and, by extension, the maps where their objectives are located — available to new players throughout the game’s lifespan, even as more are added over time.
It’s great news for fans who were worried we’d see a repeat of Destiny’s widely publicized recommendation, though personally I’m not surprised that there are no plans to bring it back for Marathon. Aside from the huge damage this will do to Bungie’s goodwill, Marathon is also a smaller and less complex game than Destiny.
Destiny features countless different maps, stages, missions, and modes, from random PvE patrol zones and three-player Strike activities to stealth quest missions, tough Dungeons and Raids, and a variety of PvP offerings. Marathon, by comparison, has several large map zones for a PvPvE extraction shooter with a smaller selection of weapons and other items.
Now, for a game approaching 200GB in file size, it’s understandable that collecting content would be necessary, but Marathon falls short of 25GB. Collecting content in a marathon would be ridiculous – that’s why it’s not in the game.
However, Bungie didn’t promise that won’t do to be part of the Marathon in the future; it only said that it “intended” to make all of the game’s content evergreen. I hope the studio never gets it near to the point where he’s starting to consider content skipping for his new production shooter.
What do you think of Bungie’s content drop system? Fate 2? Do you hate it like many gamers, or does it bother you less than most? Are you happy that the developers are trying not to remove Marathon content over time? Let me know in the comments.
