Live video game adaptations seems to be settling into streaming services these days, and I couldn’t be happier. After years of teasing that my favorite game might be adapted into a live-action series, it finally happened. In 2022, Sony approved the development of a God of War TV show and played host in January.
Now with a two-season order, they want to know everything there is to know about Inquiring Brains Prime Videoof God of War series. Let’s take a look at what we’ve discovered so far.
First, what is God of War?
A video game comes to life on television
If you have never had the pleasure of playing any PlayStation game God of War games, and you’re wondering why the god of war in question isn’t Ares, don’t sweat it. We have your back. God of War It’s a third-person action-adventure game with role-playing elements like gear crafting, skill trees, and stat management. Basically, they are linear, character-driven games inspired by Greek and Norse mythology.
The first game was released in 2005 and put players in control of Kratos, a brutal Spartan warrior in the service of the Olympians – and yes, he has the same mean front kick that Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas did. 300. After Ares tricks Kratos into killing his own family, the Spartan swears revenge and buys him. After defeating Ares, he becomes the new God of War…until the second installment released in 2007. God of War 3Kratos subverts the Greek pantheon.
The series continued in 2018 with the PlayStation 4 God of Warinformally called God of War 4. Set at least 150 years later GoW 3the new game follows Kratos, who lives in Scandinavia, on a journey with his young son to spread the ashes of his late wife Faye, who was the mother of his young son.
The sequel is called in 2022 God of War: Ragnarök Released for PS4 and PS5. That installment saw Kratos and his now-teenage son wandering the Norse realms as they tried to prevent a prophesied apocalypse. The two encounter gods like Freya and Thor, while also grappling with fate, identity, and the conflict between holding on and letting go.
What will the God of War series be about?
A story about father and son
Amazon has confirmed live-action series will follow in 2018 God of War and will closely follow the path of the last two games as Kratos deals with something new – his 10-year-old son, Atreus. The father-son dynamic has ushered in a whole new chapter in the legendary franchise and “will be the heartbeat of the new show.”
As Kratos and Atreus set out to scatter the ashes of their loved ones, their journey will take many adventures filled with moments that allow Kratos to teach Atreus how to be a better god and Atreus to teach Kratos how to be a better person. You can also expect plenty of intense combat and large-scale action along with emotional story elements.
Actors
Ryan Hurst steps into the spotlight
I couldn’t be more excited about this cast, especially after learning this Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead Kratos will be played by star Ryan Hurst. Fun fact – Hurst also voiced Thor in the game God of War: Ragnarökindeed, it is the perfect choice. Long Bright River‘s Callum Vinson will play his son Atreus, and the excitement only continues from there.
Played by Hollywood legend Mandy Patinkin Princess Bride‘s Inigo Montoya and famously said, “You killed my father! Get ready to die!” Patinkin plays Odin, the All Father and the most powerful god of the Aesir. Additionally, Ólafur Darry Ólafsson (Do not quit) will play Thor, the God of Thunder; Teresa Palmer (Discovery of witches) as Sif, the mortal woman who became a goddess when she married Thor; Ben Chapple (Plays for Keeps) as Thor’s eldest son Magni; Louis Cunningham (Marie Antoinette) as Modi, Thor’s middle child; and Austin Island (I can only imagine 2) as Thrúd, Thor’s younger daughter.
Marvel fans will be dying to see Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as Baldur, Odin’s youngest son, and Max Park (Boots) Heimdall, guardian of Asgard and one of Odin’s sons, and Evelyn Miller (Gangs of London) will play Gna, Odin’s Valkyrie commander. Alastair Duncan will play Mimir, Odin’s wise former advisor, who previously voiced the role in the game. Also starring Danny Woodburn (The Witcher) and Jeff Gulka (X files), will play the two most talented blacksmith brothers, Brock and Sindry, respectively.
How a Star Trek veteran gets involved
God of War is in good hands
At this point, you might be wondering who created the series, and we have the answer. Certified Star Trek legend Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on The Next Generation and Deep Space Nineas well as Battlestar Galactica, Foreignerand For All Humanityis the host of the series. Moore, a writer and executive producer, is perfect for these kinds of shows because of that experience.
We also know that Emmy Award winner Frederick EO Toye (Shogun, Boys) directs the first two episodes, a solid choice given his work at the top of so many films Fallout episodes. The live-action series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
When is the god of war series coming out?
The series will be broadcast live on Prime Video
while God of War While the series currently has no premiere date or trailer, we do know that production is well underway in Vancouver, Canada. Big projects take time to develop, and we have all those post-production visuals. With that in mind, it’s likely to be released in early to mid-2027.
It’s unclear what Amazon’s release strategy will be since it’s exclusive to Prime Video. The streamer isn’t necessarily known for binge-model releases like Netflixbut that doesn’t mean they won’t happen. Case in point –Shoessaw all eight episodes drop at once. So there is hope for those who would rather have a good drink than wait a week for a new episode.
Will God of War be good?
Yes. How do we know? Prime Video has proven it can handle it video game crossovers subtly, and if you don’t believe me, check out the current matches Fallout and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. For now, there’s no reason to believe that this action-packed, emotionally-charged, character-driven franchise will be charming, engaging, and utterly immersive. Stay with us.
