Internal Mac memory upgrades are expensive, which often leads users to turn to external media whenever possible. This also sometimes has its own issues with speed or reliability. HyperDrive Next It aims to bridge this gap by bringing incredible performance to external drives for your Mac.
was announced CES 2026 earlier this year HyperDrive Next Supports up to 80Gbps over USB 4 v2.0. This means that it is useful not only for SSDs, but also for other M.2 cards such as AI accelerators and network cards. To support them, the case offers two USB-C ports, one for throughput and one for external power.
About my personal favorite feature HyperDrive Next is that it can fit an SSD with an internal cooler. Many high-speed SSDs today have heatsinks, but many M.2 enclosures do not support it. HyperDrive is Next. It’s also completely tool-free and offers IP55 dust and water resistance.
I can’t say I’ve been able to test its capabilities for AI cards or network expansion, but its 80Gbps support is really what makes it possible compared to other options on the market.
As for SSD speeds, I tested using mine 2TB WD Black SN850X and achieves write speeds as high as 3167MB/s and read speeds of up to 3092MB/s. For reference, the internal 2TB SSD in the M3 iMac does about 3273MB/s write and 2984MB/s read. So it’s about equal – it’s fantastic if you’ve otherwise been hesitant about external drives because of speed.
Obviously, your mileage will vary depending on the drive you buy to put inside the case. Despite that, fantastic peak speeds, a great aluminum body, water and dust resistance (when using the included silicone case) and versatility HyperDrive Next A fantastic case for your M.2 accessories.
