Nothing passes the Phone 4a Pro JerryRigEverything tests, but there’s a problem

YouTube channel JerryRigEverything Did a durability test on the Nothing Phone 4a Pro (see video at the top of the page). Perhaps the most surprising finding concerns the phone’s IP65 rating. Host Zack Nelson discovered that accidentally inserting a SIM removal tool into the microphone hole next to the SIM card slot can seriously affect water and dust resistance.

Nelson explained that there’s a waterproof “mesh” behind the microphone hole, meaning it’s possible to puncture this layer by accidentally inserting a SIM removal tool. Fortunately, nothing probably uses an additional layer of waterproofing. That’s good news and means you should still have some ingress protection, but he adds that many other phones have a layer of waterproofing that can’t be punctured in the same way.

Otherwise, Nelson tried the usual set of tests. He tried to scratch the phone’s screen, the first scratches appearing at level six on the Mohs hardness scale, followed by the expected deeper grooves at level seven. The layer covering the rear screen and transparent deco is made of plastic. The YouTuber also held the lighter on the screen for about 20 seconds before a white mark appeared on the panel. This sign later disappeared, but not completely.

Finally, the Nothing Phone 4a Pro held up very well in the high-end bend test, which is great for a mid-range phone. In fact, Nelson noted that the device survived the durability test “with flying colors,” while calling it the best-built Nothing phone ever. This is good news for the company, but hopefully it will fix the mic hole issue in future models.
