Govee sometimes reminds me of Taco Bell: cheap, decent, and almost everything it sells is a rearranged ingredient of everything it sells. And Govee’s just-announced Lightwall feels like most of those things. Except cheap. It is 450 dollars.
The Lightwall is a 1536-RGBIC LED array suspended from a rectangular frame and designed for outdoor use. Like the Govee Curtain Lights Pro, which contains 960 LEDs, it can display pixelated images and vivid colors. From a distance, the Lightwall can make it look like you’re having an outdoor movie night—in fact, Govee touts its “cinematic-grade frame rate of 35 fps,” which means the curtain delivers “fluid and lag-free” effects.
The main difference with this Curtain Lights Proapart from the Lightwall, which has a few more LEDs, it looks portable. Govee says you can crack the Lightwall’s aluminum frame in 10 to 15 minutes without any tools. Curtain Lights Pro uses a tube mount and is not freestanding; it also displays images at a slower 30 fps.
Also, while you can bring your own GIFs to showcase, the company offers a generative AI assistant in its app – the same one used for many of the company’s other products. External lights prism and upcoming Ceiling Light Ultra— which can create lighting effects and animations for you.
The app is also where you’ll go to play with Lightwall’s 10 music modes, which try to sync the lights to the music. The effect on products like this is never as good as a programmed light show, but hey, it’s a cheap way to get moving lights at your party.
Lightwall is Materia compatible, meaning it will work with any major smart home ecosystem. But keep in mind that you won’t get any of the granular control over Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, or Samsung SmartThings that you get from the Govee app. Matter doesn’t yet support individually controllable LEDs in the light strips, so you’ll only really be able to adjust the brightness and color and turn the Lightwall on and off. Still, I think it’s nice to be able to add lights like this to existing automations like the ones that turn off all my lights at night, I forgot anyway.
