Mozilla says the Thunderbolt client supports many of the now-familiar AI interfaces and use cases, including “conversation, search, exploration, automation, and cross-device workflows.” Native apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web are available or available for direct download Built from React source code via the GitHub repository.
While the GitHub page warns that Thunderbolt is “in active development, currently undergoing security audits, and ready for enterprise production,” Mozilla is already encouraging potential enterprise customers to get in touch to coordinate paid licensing and on-premise deployments.
Thunderbolt is funded by a grant from Mozilla and managed by a subsidiary of MZLA Technologies. It was created in 2020 To manage the Thunderbird email client. It builds on Mozilla’s existing efforts in the AI space through the Mozilla Foundation Mozilla.aisupports open source tools for external AI models and agents.
By the end of 2025 Mozilla announced his goal To “do for AI what we do for the web” by offering AI services with greater agency, diversity and choice through a “decentralized open source AI ecosystem that matches the capabilities of big AI.”
