Six years after developer 4A Games released the critical and commercial hit Metro Exodus In 2019, the studio returned to the spotlight once again to unveil its next entry in the post-apocalyptic FPS franchise: Subway 2039.
Developer On Thursday morning, Metro 2039 was revealed in full in partnership with XboxIt features a 15-minute long demo of the title with Microsoft’s gaming brand new “Xbox First Look” format. It was also announced that it is planned to be released this winter.

Hello Metro residents
It’s been over seven years since our last big game was released. We have seen your comments, followed your notes and read your letters – and finally we are ready to break our silence and share with the world what we have been working on so carefully and tirelessly for a long time – METRO 2039.
During this time, many new talents from over 25 countries joined our team behind the previous METRO games in Kyiv and Malta, working alongside team veterans and returning team members, each of whom left their mark on this new chapter of METRO. At the same time, we’ve built on what made players fall in love with our games in the first place; a deep narrative, intense mayhem, incredibly detailed worlds and an atmosphere you can really feel. Our main goal is to tell a new story in the best way we know how: through our art and craft with a unique Ukrainian spirit.
These years have not been easy for the world, especially for Ukraine. Most of our team continues to work remotely from our office in Kyiv and all over Ukraine, doing so every day in unimaginable conditions. Getting power from generators or batteries during daily power outages, sheltering from missile or drone attacks, not knowing when you will be able to heat the next meal for your families; these things interfere, but don’t stop us from doing what we believe deeply. Finding ways to relax and still feel normal is nothing short of a luxury. Sometimes you put your head down and focus on work, but what keeps you running is the support of each other, and we continue to support our colleagues living in Ukraine in every way.
Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine also shaped how we wanted to tell the story of this game. Our games explore what people were like before the world ended, what they became after, and what they’re willing to do to live another day. Its meaning has always been to prevent war. But now war is our reality.
The world has become darker, crueler, more unjust and more cruel, not only in real life, but also in the world of METRO.
Consequently, our message will be about results;
The price of silence, the horrors of tyranny and the price of freedom.
At the center of this story, as always, is a destroyed world poisoned not only by radiation after the missiles are launched, but also by humans, which can sometimes be more terrible than any reading of a Geiger counter. In METRO 2039, a new faction emerges – Novoreich, led by a new Führer; the legendary Spartan, the Hunter. The Führer promises a new life to the people above, on the surface. In reality, Metro is full of propaganda, misinformation and fear. The people suffer under his authoritarian regime and brutal belief… if it’s hostile, you kill it.
Our games are based on and inspired by the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, an author who openly criticized the occupation of Ukraine.
His bold stance came at a personal cost, a life of exile from his native Russia, where dissent was a crime.
Together, we crafted this new story, one that is united by our shared values of freedom and truth, shaped by the harsh reality of the world around us.
We’re not revealing too much just yet, but rest assured that every detail will be part of the bigger picture that players will have to piece together as they make their way through a dark and depressing story.
We are incredibly proud of the journey our team has taken – long, difficult and sometimes really tiring. We can’t wait to tell you our dark, brutal and unforgettable new story.

Metro 2039 can’t come soon enough
Themes of hope and finding the strength to carry on despite seemingly insurmountable odds have always been at the core of the Metro series, but Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine has made this a very real challenge for developers 4A Games in Kiev. So it makes sense Metro 2039 will be “darker than anything you’ve seen before.” learned from this experience – and I expect her story to be more terrifying and beautiful as a result.
Developers such as 4A Games and STALKER 2’s GSC Game World despite the constant threats of war, they are able to move forward and create their own art is nothing short of amazing and admirable display of solidity and power and I can’t wait to experience Metro 2039 for myself when it comes out later this year. The game can’t come out soon enough.
