Microsoft is working on a big update Windows 11 Start menu designed to give users more control over how the menu looks. According to sources familiar with the plans, these improvements are being made as part of the new WinUI 3 Start menu. Microsoft has already confirmed that it is in the works.
Currently, the Windows 11 Start menu already has small and large layouts, but it is not configurable. Windows decides whether you have a small or large layout based on the size of your screen. Some users have complained about itand so the new Start menu will finally give users a choice for themselves, I’m told.

Another major customization option added is the ability to change entire sections of the menu that you don’t use. If you’re not a fan of the Recommended feed or pin apps to the Start menu, you’ll be able to turn these sections off in Settings with one click. You can even disable the entire list of apps if you don’t want to.
In addition to the new customization options, sources say the new Start menu will also be faster and more responsive. One of the purposes of the New Start menu is to keep the system responsive even when under heavy load. The existing Start menu will often take a few seconds to appear if the CPU is bogged down, but the new Start menu appears to resolve this issue.
These performance improvements will also extend to the new Start menu search experience. Even under heavy load, users will be able to quickly hit the Start button and start typing for search without missing a button, which happens when you use the existing Start menu very quickly.
These improvements to the Start menu are part of a larger effort by Microsoft Solve Windows pain pointsUnder the project codenamed Windows K2. The goal of the project is to re-energize Windows 11 into a stable platform that’s fast, fluid, and easy to use and doesn’t get in the way.
