Visually, Gemini Live has remained largely unchanged since launch, but Google is now testing a redesign on Android that removes the full-screen interface.
Instead of a full-screen interface, Gemini Live simply takes over the home page of the Gemini app. The top line changes to “Live with the Twins” and adds a transcript button.
The information box below is replaced by a pill-shaped container that displays a blue waveform. On the left, you can share your camera or screen, while the other side allows you to mute the microphone. Tapping the keyboard exits Gemini Live, which you can also do using the system’s back gesture.
LR: Current, previous test, redesign
Google previously tested a more minimalist design with just camera sharing and a keyboard icon, silencing the secret gesture that involved double-tapping a waveform. This new approach is more obvious.
Google app beta (version 17.14) users see this Gemini Live design extensively. It’s currently limited to the Gemini app, not the overlay, which is unchanged today, but will be redesigned for use after the in-app experience.
Removing Gemini Live’s full-screen user interface is an interesting move, given how iconic and consistent it is. It was visually redundant, if not friendly, but it was very open and took up a lot of marketing.
