Home Assistant works with many smart home devices, but not all. If you have smart home technology that you haven’t been able to connect to Home Assistant in the past, it’s worth checking it again.
Home Assistant is adding integrations at a breakneck pace
Each release adds more options
Home Assistant releases updates on a monthly cycle with smaller patch releases throughout the month. Each monthly update adds new features to Home Assistant and they always include new integrations officially added to Home Assistant.
There are usually a significant number of integrations added every month. For example, the 2026.4 release includes 14 new integrations, including Infrared, UniFi Access, WiiM, and Autoscope. There have been at least four new integrations in any given release over the past 12 months, with as many as 17 added in some months.
This does not include individual components that you can make Install via HACS integrations that are not officially supported. Many of these custom components allow you to connect smart home devices not supported by Home Assistant integrations, and some custom components become official integrations.

Infrared support unlocks many older devices

Some new Home Assistant integrations only allow you to connect a limited number of smart devices from a certain brand. However, there are some that open access to all smart home devices. One such example is the Infrared integration added to Home Assistant 2026.4.
The Infrared integration Adds native support for controlling IR devices like TVs or AC units using Home Assistant. Previously, you had to use manual solutions or custom integrations to do this, but Home Assistant now has a dedicated native platform for infrared control.

Support for all major protocols
Infrared devices aren’t the only devices you can add to Home Assistant. All major protocols are supported, including ones you might not expect.
For example, if Bluetooth smart devices around your home, you might assume you won’t be able to connect them to Home Assistant due to Bluetooth’s limited range. However, you can also use ESP32 devices as Bluetooth proxies and place them near your Bluetooth devices. These proxies can receive commands from Home Assistant over Wi-Fi and send the appropriate Bluetooth signals to your Bluetooth devices, controlling them as if they were already in Bluetooth range of your Home Assistant server.
Home Assistant also has mature support for Matter and continues to add new Matter features. Home Assistant 2026.4 included an update that allows you to manage users and Material-compatible PIN codes. smart locks directly from within Home Assistant. How to check if your existing devices are supported

If you want to see if your smart home device will work with Home Assistant, there are a few things you can do. The first is to see if the device is automatically detected. Turn on the device and make sure it’s connected, and you should see it appear in Home Assistant’s list of detected devices.
If not, the next step is to look for official integration. On the Integrations page, click Add an integration button and type your device brand to see if there are any results. If they are, install the integration and follow the setup instructions to connect your device.
If there is no official integration, you can try HACS. It is a store of custom components created by the community, many of which allow you to connect specific brands of smart home devices. If you can’t find an individual component in the HACS store, try searching online as some require manual installation.

Check your devices before replacing them
Home Assistant supports many smart home devices, and the list continues to grow. It’s worth checking Home Assistant again before you replace old gear or assume the device won’t work. Support may have arrived since the last time you checked.
