“I’m retiring after 35+ years at Microsoft. I’ll be stepping down on July 1st and staying on in a consulting role afterward.” Jha said in a company-wide email sent this morning. “We’re announcing these high-level changes today, and between now and June, my leadership team and I will be working together to finalize the full cascade of details needed in this type of transition. This includes aligning operational rhythms, decision ownership, and details on the future organizational structure.
Nadella delivered his message along with Jha’s retirement announcement. “As we look to the future, the opportunities ahead are vast. We have the depth of talent, product ethic and clear sense of purpose as a company to ensure our technology developments achieve our mission of empowerment.”
The current head of Windows now reports directly to the CEO, which is good news for Windows as it puts the platform back at the leadership table. Windows has been back and forth from the leaderboard over the past decade, but the platform is always better for the leader when he reports directly to the person at the top.

With Pavan Davuluri now reporting to Nadella, I hope this gives the CEO a better look at how things are going on the Windows side and encourages more focus on paying attention to customer feedback and delivering strong updates that don’t undermine user trust.
