The wait continues: Valve confirms Steam Deck 2 is still in the labs

Today is proving to be a busy day for Valve news. The creator of the Steam market has now confirmed it Steam Controller price and release date. While we didn’t get any information about the highly anticipated Steam Machine, the company did offer an update on another highly anticipated product it’s currently working on.

Steam Deck developer Pierre-Loup Griffais said about it IGN This Valve is “hard at work” on the next Steam Deck. When asked about the next handheld computer, Griffais said:

We’ve been working hard on it, and it’s clear that if you look at our hardware projects over the years, you can draw a straight line from the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine to the Steam Deck to everything we’ve announced and shipped this year. And we expect Steam Deck 2 to be very much the same, where a lot of what we do will be learnings that develop it.

In 2023 Griffais confirmed said there would be a Steam Deck 2. However, he also said that the day for the next-gen Steam Deck might not come for several years. At the time, the developer suggested that Valve would be interested in releasing Steam Deck 2 if there was a significant enough performance improvement that didn’t come at the cost of battery life.

Unfortunately, Griffais still doesn’t want to offer an exact date for when the next-gen Steam Deck will arrive. However, it seems that the company intends to release a new handheld. Hopefully, it won’t be long before Valve finds the right balance between battery life and higher performance.
