Comic book fans are probably aware of this, but movie fans may not be. DC/Vertigo and Dynamite Entertainment in 2014 published a series of seven copies he called Django/Zorro. It was one of a kind Sequel to Quentin Tarantino 2012 hit movie, Django Unchained, and saw the main character merge everyone’s favorite masked man kick some ass.
Tarantino co-wrote the comic with Matt Wagner, and now a screenwriter has been hired to adapt it for the big screen. Deadline reports that Brian Helgeland (writer Mystic River, LA Confidential, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Master of Dreams, as well as a writer and director A knight’s tale) was commissioned by Sony Pictures to continue Tarantino and Wagner’s vision.
According to the trade, Tarantino will not be directly involved with the project, but has given his blessing for Sony to proceed with the project. There’s no word on whether or not Jamie Foxx will return to reprise his role, but the story will likely feature a new, younger Zorro.
The comic begins several years after the events of the story Django Unchained, Django meets Diego de la Vega and the two become friends in revenge. In recent films, de la Vega was the elderly Zorro, played by Anthony Hopkins, who passed the mask on to Antonio Banderas. But again, it will follow a younger Zorro.
Either way, we love a good crossover, and any way to see some of Tarantino’s characters back on screen in some way, shape, or form is wildly intriguing. Helgeland is also a very talented writer, so this feels like a project we’ll see someday. But if you’re going to re-edit Zorro, do you also re-edit Django?
