TL;DR
- YouTube TV subscribers are experiencing audio issues on NBC network stations.
- Users claim that the sound is about half the level of other channels.
- It is suspected that NBC is not sending 5.1 surround sound audio to YouTube TV.
YouTube TV subscribers are experiencing a strange sound problem. The current issue is the drastic reduction in volume and sound quality of local TV broadcasts and national programs. Specifically, the problem affects NBC-affiliated stations.
This volume problem does not affect only one area in the United States. About reports Reddit (via Cord Cutters News) is widespread, covering the entire country. According to affected subscribers, the sound output of NBC affiliates is about half the level of other channels. As a result, viewers are forced to significantly increase the volume of their televisions. Some users also say that the sound is muffled.

One commenter on a Reddit thread claims that NBC has stopped sending 5.1 surround sound audio to YouTube TV. However, YouTube TV still “stores (stereo PCM) audio in 5.1 AC3 wrapping with surround sound metadata.” They suggest that the lack of a multi-channel audio format leads to downscaling to stereo, which can lead to lower volume and sound quality issues.
A problem like this isn’t a great look, especially at a time when users are more likely to encounter local news because NBC broadcasts the NBA playoffs. Android Authority Google has been contacted for comment. We will update this article when new information becomes available.
